PARADIGM 7SE MK-III HOME AUDIO SPEAKERS
#...
7156-7157
Made in Canada
Circa
1993-97

for sale

The following is my impression after extensively auditioning the Paradigm 7SE MKIII's. These speakers are much more forgiving one placement than their larger brothers, the 11SE MKIII. I found that almost regardless of placement or proximity to one another, their performance sonics came across as natural, with great balance and detail, with very little limiting effects on each other.
These are especially great speakers if you are a fan of 'modern' Jazz or 'Brass' / 'horn sections' and vocally strong selections. Also great for folk rock and easy rock.  If you're a 'rocker', or need 'tunes for your parties' these are NOT the speakers for you. If you appreciate very 'natural' reproduction, especially of 'brass-horns, pianos, jazz drums and percussion, then these speakers will be marvelous!

PARADIGM 7SE MKIII FEATURES INCLUDE:

- 2-way, 3-Driver, Bass Reflex, vented via a 'Quasi-3rd Order, Resistive' port for Impressive Low-End Performance (and their 'Low-End' is VERY impressive)
- Dual 165mm / 6.5" Low Frequency Drivers (woofers), Non-deteriorating, Butyl Rubber surrounds, with die-cast alloy frames, Polypropylene cones & 1.5" VC's.
- 25mm / 1" Treated Textile Dome Tweeter with aluminum VC former that's 'ferro-fluid' cooled and damped
- 19mm thick, MDF cabinet construction (Has a lot to do with their 63lb weight)

- Internally braced cabinets to reduce unwanted resonances and 'ballooning' effects
- 3" High-Velocity, Tuned bass port

- Bi-Wire-able / Bi-amp-able via Gold, 5-Way Binding Posts

PARADIGM 7SE MKIII ORIGINAL SPECIFICATIONS / SPECS:

System design: 2-Way, 3-Driver
Bass Reflex, vented via a 'Quasi-3rd Order, Resistive' port for Impressive Low-End Performance
Frequency Response: 50-20,000Hz +/- 2dB w/ a 'Low End' you can definitely feel (as in 'shakes the concrete floor in our audition space)
Nominal / Minimum Impedance:
6/

Sensitivity; Room / Anechoic: 92dB / 89dB 1w @ 1m

Cross-over type / frequencies:
Quasi-Butterworth @1.8kHz
Recommended Power amplifier rating:
15 to 175 WPC (I would not consider utilizing these speakers with less than something rated at least 40 Watts of 'Old School' type power)
Max
Power rating:
120 Watts of 'Music Power'

From the original Paradigm 7SE MKIII / MK3 brochure,
"
This elegant design occupies very little floor space and yet offers stunning performance - very lo coloration with wide bandwidth, low distortion and high power handing...
Advance drive units and a sophisticated dividing network ensures excellent clarity and imaging. Twin bass / mid drivers provide high dynamic power ability...
The 7seMk3 exemplifies the idea that strict adherence to the principles of simplicity and finesse in design will result in a product whose performance is second to none at a price with which none can compete
".

The
tall 'tower' stature of the Paradigm 7seMk3 speakers puts the tweeter more on plane with your ears, instead of your knees.
Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these. He completely tested them with both recorded material, PN @ 20-20k and swept them with our AF generator from 10Hz-25,000 Hz and feeding them with the output from our Hafler DH-500 Pro Power Amp, looking for any irregular vibrations / anomalies in either the drivers. driver mounting, crossovers or cabinet structure integrity. We then further auditioned with a myriad of our difficult to reproduce 'test' CD's. They performed and sounded great!
I spent an inordinate amount of time auditioning these speakers. I tried about every genre of music, including most of the selections listed on our 'Demo Cuts' page but here are some notes I made on their post restoration 'check sheet';
TLC's "Scrub" from their album 'Fan Mail', did 'sub-bass' note @ 1'25" & 1'35" SO SOLIDLY & PROMINENTLY THAT IT SHOOK OUR CONCRETE FLOOR (and that is a 'tell tale' indicator of how most of the rest of the testing would go, and was essentially the same 'low-end' performance we experienced with the largest of this series, the '11se MkIII'), Dire Straits' "So Far Away" from their album 'Brothers in Arms', Donald Fagens, "I.G.Y." from the album "Night Fly" "Was as near perfect as any speaker could do. Good power and 'snap', great balance, and fine WITHOUT an EQ!", '24K Gold Edition of Jennifer Waren's "Famous Blue Raincoat' allowed her vocals to sound as though she was in the room with me on a 'live sound system',  Allison Kraus and Union Station's Baby, Now That I've Found You" '"was very natural and open. These speakers were also able to separate the bass guitar, acoustic guitar and here vocals VERY well", Don Williams' DDD version of 'Country Boy' 'Was VERY LIVE', Trapt's 'Headstrong', Most of Van Halen’s “1984” and Michael Jackson’s “BAD” all sounded great, but have a limit at about 116dB / 1m. Beyond that you’ll get ‘woofer snap’ (by the way, 116dB is pretty damn loud). Calvin Hampton's, "The Wedding March" from "Digital Pipes, The Splendor of the Organ" a digital recording of a cathedral pipe organ, was "BIG AND OPEN" without any external processing, and a few others, all digitally recorded and some 'DDD'.
Decent power handling characteristics. They are able to handle "power" better than your average speaker. Not simply referring to their wattage rating, but just the way they perform at higher power / volume levels without "falling apart" sonically (at least up to about 116dB with some fairly 'strenuous' material). We 'stood' on them to a reasonable degree with our test Hafler 485 watt power amp.

The Black Oak, 'wood grained', satin finish cabinets in good shape as are the grills and grill frames. Only cosmetic issues to speak of would be a repaired 'ding' on the rear edge of one cabinet, minor grill cloth snags and some minor 'dimpling' in one of the tweeter domes (cosmetics only).
Great speaker for up to mid-high volume levels. Again, these are more "detail" oriented speakers NOT "Power Pounding Party" speakers. If that's what you're looking for then don't buy these.
Great for most Jazz, and percussive jazz, brass / horn section, 'punch, well mixed modern music (think 'YAZ'), 'percussion heavy' selections / music. Very accurate, detailed & 'refined' sound!
Comes with an e-copy / pdf of the original Paradigm 7SE MKIII / SE series brochure. Cabinets measure 35" H x 8.25" W x 14.75" D and weigh a 43 lbs each. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering).

VINTAGE CERWIN VEGA STEREO SPEAKERS
CERWIN VEGA DX-7 SPEAKERS

 Circa mid 1980-84
for sale

BIG and BIG sounding Cerwin Vega "HED", DX7, 3-way speakers! They are capable of high volume levels while producing "pounding" & "tight" bass with great balance on the top and mid end. Great balance too.
Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these. Both woofers have NEW, fresh foam surrounds. We have completely tested all drivers. All drivers were removed and tested individually. Since the woofers just had new surrounds installed, they should be good for another 20-30 years.
Gasket / sealant material was added to all driver mounting flanges, prior to re-installation to reduce any possibilities of vibration or acoustic anomalies. Felt feet were installed to the bottom plates. Cosmetically, the grills were cleaned & the wood grain, vinyl wrapped cabinets in great shape.
Next, as always they were tested with both recorded material, PN 20-20k and swept them with our AF generator from 1Hz-3kHz.
Then came our standard, 'issue exposing' and on some levels, 'abusive' test recordings. These speakers are ready to go!
We auditioned this pair extensively and 'THEY DELIVERED' as expected, but additionally adding the 'gasketing' really 'tightened' up the cabinets and cleaned up the bass response.

Our demo cuts included the following; Dire Straits' "So Far Away" from their album 'Brothers in Arms' album,
Donald Fagens, "I.G.Y." from the album "Night Fly"
(solid and snappy reproduction), '24K Gold Edition of Jennifer Waren's "Famous Blue Raincoat' (the saxophone was very 'live' and smooth),
TLC's "Scrub" from their album 'Fan Mail'
(did 'sub-bass' note @ 1'25" & 1'35" VERY WELL),
Allison Kraus and Union Station's "Baby, Now That I've Found You"
(I expected this to be 'beamy' in the mids, but was upfront and natural),
Cowboy Junkies ‘Sweet Jane
(was a bit ‘contained’, but only barely, and still sounded very ‘live’),
Don Williams' DDD version of 'Country Boy'
(was perfectly ‘up-front’ in the soundstage),
Calvin Hampton's, "The Wedding March" from "Digital Pipes, The Splendor of the Organ", a digital recording of a cathedral pipe organ
(was ‘naturally spacious),
Pro-Mark's demo CD's cut "ROCCO"
(was AMAZING to listen to).
Trapt’s “Headstrong”
(was ‘solid’ and the woofers exhibited no sign of fatigue even at upper power levels)

Most of the cuts from Michael Jacksons' 'Number Ones' such as "Bad" "Beat It", and "Smooth Criminal", were ‘strongly’ reproduced,
Van Halens' cut "Drop Dead Legs" from the CD "1984" ROCKED!

Nickel Creeks’ “When in Rome” from their CD "Why Must the Fire Die?"
(was 'open and up-front' and a bit 'over-enthusiastic, but there's attenuators to bring them back under control),
and a few others, all digitally recorded and some 'DDD'.

Incredible power handling characteristics for a speaker this size. They are able to handle "power" better MUCH than your average speaker. Not simply referring to their wattage rating, but just the way they perform at higher power / volume levels without "falling apart" sonically. We 'stood' on them HARD with our test Hafler 500 watt power amplifier. 'Solid', punchy and 'tight' low-end, with no 'mush'. Great balance, detailed sound reproduction and NO LISTENER FATIGUE!!!
Fabulous 'all around' speaker for vintage or modern stereo systems.

Cerwin Vega DX-7 Features:
- 12" Foam surrounded Woofer with fresh foam surrounds just installed for years of trouble-free service
- 5" Non-deteriorating paper surround Mid
- 1.5" 360° Radial-Horn Tweeter
- "Real" internal cross-over
- 4 Ω minimal & 8 Ω nominal rating
- Hi and Mid attenuators on rear input panel for custom tailoring sound to your tastes and listening room
- 3" tuned port for extending bass response in the rear of the cabinet

- Rear mounted fuse for tweeter protection
- "Spring-clip"  speaker connectors

Cerwin Vega DX-7 Specifications /Specs:
Frequency Response: 34-20,000Hz ± 3dB

Efficiency: 96 dB 1w @ 1m
Nominal Impedance: 4Ω each
Cross-over frequencies: @ 700 Hz & 4kHz
Recommended Minimum Power amplifier rating: 5 watts

Continuous / Max power rating: 225 watts

These are great sounding speakers.  Again, our speaker tech has completely refurbished, tested and Certified these speakers performing the previously mentioned processes. Great speaker for medium to medium large systems, at lower volumes, or to GET LOUD!
Each measures 25.75" h x 14.75" w x  12.75" d and weighs 44 lbs unpacked.
Includes our 90 day warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering)

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit. Everything was cleaned inside and out including all switches, controls and contacts. Extensive cleaning of unit internally.

ü Power Supply circuit board and both driver boards had all of their 'electrolytic capacitors' replaced (a note on this; prior to replacing the capacitors, we 'dialed the unit in perfectly' for DC offset, Bias and clean output sine waves to beyond rated power. After replacing all the Electrolytics on the power supply circuit board and the amplifier driver boards, the unit was again measured to perfect levels. The old capacitors ALL checked fine, so basically we have baggies of about 50, 35 year old capacitors that are in fine shape. Just FYI.)

ü Control potentiometers were 'flooded' w/ 'De-OxId' and are quiet (very difficult to do as 'tone' section must be painstakingly removed).

ü ALL Switches were flooded with cleaner with emphasis especially on the always at issue, switches / controls such as the 'Function' selector, 'Tape Monitors', '-20dB Muting', and 'Tone Bypass'.

ü Internal fuses checked for correct value / function and replaced where necessary (and there were some 'in-correct' values we found).

ü  World AC Power correctly set for North American current.

ü This unit has a tuner based on the other Pioneer models, with a couple of additional circuits. The additional circuits are the 'Quartz Lock' and the 'Fine Tune', both of which are indicated by LED's near the 'Stereo' LED indicator. These two additional circuits are an issue with SX-1980's we've discovered, and escalating the unit to an outside tech firm, did not improve their function. While the unit's tuner sounds great, it will drift after being left on for a few hours. Could be 2 or could be 24, but it will drift and need a slight 'nudge' on the tuning knob to bring it back into station center. Also, the 'Fine Tune' light is on when the station is slightly 'off center', and not when it's perfectly tuned. Both our senior tech and the outside tech firm spent 8-10 hours on these two aspects, with no appreciable effect. The second tech discovered that the unit could be put into a mode which defeated the additional circuits (which when left intact caused a very faint, cyclical noise), so now it functions like the tuner on the Pioneer SX-1280, 1080, 980. Sonically the tuner sounds great, pulls in stations fine, has great side band rejection, and great 'Stereo' sound.

ü We of course aligned the tuner front-end on both AM & FM bands for optimum performance as older tuner components will have 'drifted' over the years.

ü Amplifier section had output bias and DC offset adjusted to spec levels

ü We bought ALL the remaining AEL-029 dial bulbs from Pioneer a few years ago. These are the original, official 'Stanley 8V' with blue tinting. We purchased a couple dozen and are probably worth their weight in gold. We have not used them on any of our Pioneer restoration, and have been using a fine substitution. We were saving them for a Pioneer SX-1980 to come along. Well, this unit got them. All four dial lamps and meter lamps replaced with ORIGINAL PIONEER AEL-029's. The balance of the light bulbs, including ALL indicator lamps, the dial pointer lamp, Speaker indictors, 'Stereo' indicator, input / function indicators were replaced with new.

ü All 4 power supply filter capacitors independently tested.

ü All inputs tested and both sides produce clean and even sine waves into 'brick-wall' 8 & 4 ohm loads!

VERY GOOD FM TUNER!
FM reception as well great and IMPECCABLY CLEAN!!! All inputs tested and both sides produce clean and even sine waves into 'brick-wall' 8 & 4 ohm loads! No power supply hum of any kind. It's dead silent! All functions test fine. Following restoration procedures, the unit was ran continuously at medium volume, as all our amplifier / receivers are, into a load with "Loudness" on and both Tone Controls at 10 for 48 hours into a 4 Ohm load. Cosmetically, the top, horizontal edge of the face plate has some light / shallow striations running it's length, there's a scuff on the volume knob, and at some point in it's past, the Walnut, wood 'half bonnet' was re-veneered in a lighter shade of walnut (see photos above). Again, overall this is a fabulous receiver. You won't be disappointed. Total restoration time investment between two senior techs ~38 hours.

On our test bench, the internal amplifiers of this receiver #...0723 produced 45 volts per channel @ 8 ohms with 1Khz input for 253 watts and 37.4 volts per channel @ 4 ohms with 1Khz input for 349 watts via discrete outputs with 1 kHz input.
 AC Idle current @ .7A,
DC balance adjusted to 0 ±3mVDC and DC offset output adjusted to <~30mVDC either channel. Floor noise measured 0mVAC / >60dB either channel.

This is the most SERIOUS receiver Pioneer ever marketed and as listed above, this one has been 'certified' following the refurb by Oak Tree Vintage and is in incredible condition!!!
An interesting note on this one is that the consignor picked it up from a member of the Denver based, 1970's band, 'Sugar Loaf'
(famous for hit's such as "Green Eyed Lady" and "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You"). It was said to be the amp in their practice space.

Huge power supply in the Pioneer SX-1980 featuring Dual independent, toroidal transformers (in one housing) for a 'TRUE DUAL POWER SUPPLY', followed by 4X 100V / 22,000μF power supply filter caps to feed the huge output transistors.
Again, we have completely gone through the Pioneer SX-1980 Stereo Receiver, as stated above and 'certified' it's ready to go!
The only 'performance' issues would be the previously mentioned tuner LED's in FM mode, and cosmetically, the scuffs on the top, horizontal face edge, the volume knob scuff and the lighter, real wood Walnut cabinet.  Unit looks great and sounds HUGE! This is truly one of the "BIGGEST BOYS" when it comes to CLASSIC STEREO RECEIVERS! Measures 22.25" wide x 20" deep x 8.25" high and weighs a HEAVY 73 lbs unpacked. Includes our 90 day limited warranty!

VINTAGE PIONEER POWER AMPLIFIER
PIONEER SPEC-4 POWER AMP
#...1420M

"WORLD AC POWER"
Circa 1977-79
M.I.J.
for sale

ü   Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü  Everything was cleaned inside and out including all switches, controls and contacts.  Cleaned and re-lubed all control shafts.

ü  Internal fuses checked for correct value / function and replaced where necessary.

ü  ‘Multi-Voltage’ switch replaced and correctly set for North American current.

ü  Solder joints reflowed on all possible high heat and stress points

ü  PC Molex connector pins burnished
  INSERT PHOTO

ü  All output transistors removed and individually tested. Fresh heat sink compound was used on re-installation, of course.   INSERT PHOTO

ü  Amplifier section had output bias and DC offset adjusted to spec levels after 10 min warm-up.

ü  All functions tested for perfect operation.

ü  Following above procedures, unit was cosmetically detailed inside and out.

ü  All inputs tested and both sides produce clean and even sine waves into static 8 & 4 ohm loads! No power supply hum of any kind. It's dead silent!

ü  Following restoration procedures, the unit was run continuously at medium volume, as all our amplifier / receivers are, into a load with "Loudness" on and both Tone Controls at 10 for 48 hours.

On our test bench, each internal amplifier of this particular unit, #...1420M, produced peak power of 38 volts per channel at 8 ohms for 180 watts per channel and 28 volts at 4 ohms for 196 watts per channel via discrete, TO-3 / Metal Cased output transistors (4x 2SB554 & 4x 2SD424).
AC Idle current at 750mA. DC offset adjusted to a SUPER LOW <1.0mVDC L&R & floor -60dB.

One of the most sought after among the ‘vintage’ power amps of the audio world by Pioneer, the “SPEC-4” Power Amplifier. Super build quality, with great features. Works great, Sounds FABULOUS AND HUGE! Enough power to handle most any speaker you 'want to throw at it', and pretty much any size room you would might have. Conversely, enough power and detail down low for quieter listening situations. Unit does have a few small ‘dings / battle-scars’ on the right, front panel (see photos above). Fortunately it does make up for it in high performance!

Pioneer SPEC-4 Features Include:

- Dual AC Power Supply featuring quad 80V / 22,000 uF capacitors and two large, Pioneer Power Transformers   INSERT PHOTO

BUFFET CLARINET
MODEL B12
INTERMEDIATE STUDENT Bb CLARINET

for sale

This clarinet is modeled after the Famous Buffet Grenadilla wood clarinets from the 'old day's'. When I worked for a 'full-line' music store thru the 1990's, we would periodically have a 'vintage' Buffet come thru and they never hung around long once serviced for re-sale. It is what most clarinet players asked for. That and Yamaha's.  This is a Buffet B12 clarinet, again, designed after the 'vintage' horns for the student / beginner and into the intermediate market. The Buffet B12 clarinets are made from ABS resin with an appearance and sound similar to that of genuine Grenadilla wood. These models are lightweight, strong and easy to clean perfect for even very young players. The Buffet B12 model has a very attractive and traditional design with nickel-plated body rings, straight key work and a traditional bell ring. The body is buffed to give the appearance of wood. The nickel silver key work is cold forged and induction soldered, providing greater stability, precision and quality. The B12 model is mounted with double fish skin pads which ensure excellent sealing.

 Features:
- Nickel plated keys, body rings & plated bell rings
- 65mm barrel
- 14.65mm poly-cylindrical bore
- Arched key cups (same as R-13 model)
- Staggered trill keys (same as R-13 model)
- Blue Needle Springs
- Adjustable 3-position thumb rest
- Ergonomic key design: Improved playing comfort like that of a professional clarinet
- Pointed needle springs for quality key action
- Undercut tone holes for improved tone quality and faster response
- High quality Double fish skin pads enables air tightness and are long lasting
- Blow-molded, hard shell case

Mouthpiece Assembly with Ligature, Cap and Mouthpiece

VINTAGE KENWOOD SPEAKERS
KENWOOD KL-888D / KL888D SPEAKERS
#...1030 / 1680
 Circa 1976-78
 Made in Japan
for sale
Classic lattice grill, vintage & large Kenwood KL-888D stereo speakers. 5-Way, 6-Speaker / Driver, Bass Reflex cabinet design. These are VERY efficient speakers with above average tone balance for late '70's speakers. Plenty of top end that can be filtered / tailored to your tastes with built-in attenuator or external EQ / tone control. Also HUGE & tight low end, likely due to the "Air-Suspension" cabinet design.
Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these. Speakers were entirely disassembled. Crossover components and internal circuit boards were inspected for any possible 'sympathetic' component vibrations. Attenuators were removed and cleaned for static free operation. Our tech has completely tested all drivers, then re-assembled with their original and adequate gasketing material under all driver frames to further reduce any possibilities of vibration or acoustic anomalies, and tested with both recorded material, PN and swept them with our AF generator from 20-3kHz. Following, of course our normal barrage of 'pink noise' and an AF sweep from 3k down to 20Hz, our demo cuts ran the gamut from Dire Straits, 'Brothers in Arms', TLC 'Fan Mail', Allison Kraus and Union Station, Nickelback, a digital recording of a cathedral pipe organ, our 'Usher Speaker' demo CD (no not that Usher), 'Friday Night in San Francisco', with Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia, Nickel Creek's Why Should the Fire Die, Jennifer Warnes, 'Famous Blue Raincoat', and a few others, all digitally recorded and some 'DDD'.
Incredible power handling characteristics. They are able to handle "power" better MUCH than your average speaker. Not simply referring to they're wattage rating, but just the way the perform at higher power / volume levels without "falling apart" sonically. We 'stood' on them HARD with our test Hafler 500 watt power amp.

They also seem to be able to handle "power" better than your average speaker. Not simply referring to they're wattage rating, but just the way the perform at higher power / volume levels without "falling apart" sonically. Among the top performers of the many speakers we have auditioned over the years. Unfortunately, these are missing their grills.

   Features:

   - 16" Non-deteriorating Cloth surround Woofer
   - 6.5" Non-deteriorating, paper surround Mid
   - 6.25" x 2" Horn, Upper Midrange with Compression increasing Phase Plug
 - Dual 2.25" Radial Horn Tweeters with Phase Plugs to increase compression
   - 1.25", Mylar Cone, Radial Super Tweeter
   - "Real" internal cross-over, not just a couple of "caps" on the mids and tweets
   - 3-position Hi frequency attenuators, using resistors, not failure prone Ni-Chrome wire, for custom tailoring sound to your tastes and listening room

  - Dual 2.25" Tuned ports for extended low end
   - Vented / cloth woofer dust cap for increasing low end efficiency

Specs:

 Frequency Response:
25-22,000Hz +- 3dB
 Efficiency:
98dB 1w @ 1m
 Nominal Impedance:

 Cross-over frequencies:
700Hz, 2kHz, 5kHz and 10kHz
 Recommended Nominal Power Amplifier range:
10-200 watts
 Recommended MAX Power rating:
150 watts

Very nice looking wood grain, vinyl wrap cabinets. Again, these speakers are sans grills. The cabinets are in excellent shape. Our speaker tech has completely checked these speakers inside and out. Loose inputs tightened. 2 corner joints re-glued / clamped. Attenuators removed and all positions cleaned. As with all of our speakers have completely tested these w/ AF sweep, PN and our standard barrage of test recordings looking for any acoustical anomalies, extraneous noises or sounds and to judge overall sound quality with our Hafler test power amp. All drivers are in perfect condition, work and sound fine!
Speakers look and sound GREAT! Huge, accurate and loud sound, but also very efficient at lower powers due to their 98dB rating! If you're looking for a great performing speaker at medium to higher volume applications, you will not be disappointed with these speakers. Each measures 26" tall x 17.5" wide x 12" deep and weighs 54 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard limited speaker warranty ( & excluding problems due to under / over powering)

Yes, we know, EVERYTHING (at least all the receivers) are SOLD OUT
currently.
We will be posting more in the future.
We are currently focusing resources on expanding our receiver 'Parts Department' AND 'refurbished' stereo receivers sell faster than we can get them refurbished, and it's a slow process getting them ready.
