 TAPE DECK
Plays up to 3.25" Reels

 Circa 1960's

We have completely gone through this unit. Both reel tables were removed, cleaned & re-lubed. Both spindles in perfect alignment and now spin freely. As they are rubber coated and the basis of the 'drive system', their rubber was reconditioned for positive traction. Internal transport motor 'slide' assembly cleaned of old grease & re-lubed where necessary. Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Volume control cleaned for quite performance. Head alignment / azimuth has been adjusted to conform to most of our test tapes. No current or past corrosion in the battery compartment and the battery lid with lock is intact. This unit is very clean and was well.

Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and mechanical parts cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled.

 Flywheels removed, cleaned and reinstalled.

 Capstans burnished

Again, the entire transport assembly was painstakingly disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

Motor 'start / run' capacitors checked.

 Motor lubed.

Fresh, New belts installed (all three) for trouble-free service.

VU meter illumination lamps / bulbs check fine.

Both spindles were completely disassembled, cleaned and had their bearings / bushings cleaned and re-lubed and are in perfect alignment.

Heights adjusted on both reel tables.

Reel Hub brakes adjusted for best performance in all 'Fast Wind' modes with tape at any position on reels, while not 'grabbing' during playback.

'Auto-Stop' mechanism disassembled and re-lubed with fresh 300,000 silicon damping fluid.

Supply / Take-up 'back tension' adjusted.

Rubber pinch roller was removed, cleaned & reconditioned.

All three internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip.

Tape heads and entire transport cleaned and demagnetized.

Heads in great shape as well (tech noted they have "very little wear"), and should have many hundreds of hours of performance left in them. (this deck features 'Deep Gap' heads which can take a LOT of wear with no diminished performance)

Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL tape to 15kHz with oscilloscope.

 Plays INCREDIBLY WELL

Adjusted to record INCREDIBLY WELL @ ~ 0dB and sound GREAT on 'Ampex GM-456' tape.

Floor noise measured at >-60dB w/ blank tape, L&R

Both PB output levels and VU meters playback internally adjusted for response within 2dB.

We really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones and Pink Noise looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition.

Speed tested to 99.3% accuracy, utilizing 'STL' test tape (meaning that a 1000Hz tape plays at 1007Hz. Very close to perfect)

Following electro/mechanical restoration, unit received a cosmetic
cleaning / detailing and looks near new. The deck even has a 'Real Wood Veneer' case that was given a coat of lemon oil.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 19+ hours).
   ____________________________

Again, following the above stated bench work / testing, our technician has 'Certified' this deck and it is an great performer sonically and mechanically. This deck has had EXTENSIVE restoration with the above mentioned 19+ hours of tech time. Restored, extensively tested / played, then re-benched after 'burn-in' to double check performance / adjustments.
A note on the Ampex AX-50. I've seen a few opinions / remarks on the web regarding this aspect (of course, yes, there's any myriad of "opinions / remarks" on the web about anything, by anybody (including me) ). One is that the deck has a bit more 'motor / fan' noise than some. Yes, that's true, again referring to "a bit". We measured it at 41dB at 1 meter away (actually had to get our dB meters within 120cm to even get a reading, then mathematically deduce the 'meter value'). That's 'not bad', however if you have a very quiet piece of music playing, or the deck is in between tracks, or you simply have it power up without a tape loaded / playing, and are sitting near the deck, you will detect the motor fan noise. It can actually be reduced by setting the deck on a 'soft' surface such as felt or neoprene (think, a couple of 'mouse pads').
(To give you an idea of how loud 41 dB is, Normal conversation averages 60dB-65dB @ 1 meter. Given that a "3dB difference" requires a doubling or halving of power, "41dB" is 6-7 times LESS power than conversation level). By the way, this is 'ambient sound' and has no effect on the output signal. It's almost not worth mentioning, but it is a bit more sound than we typically detect from a running reel to reel deck. They all make some ambient noise.

Comes with a copy of the Ampex AX-50 Owners manual. Includes our standard 90 day limited warranty. Measures 16.25" wide x 9" deep x 14.75" tall and weighs 29 lbs unpacked.

(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately depending on stock levels.)

Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit

Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work) (tech actually noted on the work sheet, that they were "like new").

Head rotating gear inspected with a jewelers loop prior to starting any restoration work, and found to be 'hairline' crack free.

Reel drive is accomplished with gears, so fortunately no tires to 'glaze over' or crack and loose traction down the road. Yipeee.

Capstan drive belt is 'like new', but we still reconditioned it for trouble-free service.

Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned

Capstan burnished

Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

Head alignment and azimuth at 125Hz, 1kHz and 10kHz adjusted for BOTH directions for 'peak performance' with O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

Eject door operates smoothly.

Tape Counter Function tested

Dolby B & C NR circuits / function tested

'Memory / Zero Return' function tested

Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

Both Internal playback amplifier channels adjusted with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric input with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

Both Internal Record amplifier channels adjusted with Volt meter, O-Scope and w/ STL and TEAC MTT-257H calibration / alignment tapes. Both channels now even output.

Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

Speed adjusted to 100% accuracy BOTH directions, with 1kHz factory calibration tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz)

Cosmetically it's essentially in NEW condition.

(Following the extensive restoration, we did 'test recordings' of a 'ddd' CD on 6 tapes; Sony Normal Bias, Fuji Normal Bias, TDK Normal Bias, Maxell Normal Bias, TDK 'SA' High Bias, and Maxell 'XL-II' High Bias. We found that for Normal and High Bias, of those tapes tested, both the TDK and "Maxells" performed VERY well on this particular deck. The Maxell's did however much 'outshine' the TDK's for being able to 'over saturate' on the levels. While doing the test recording's, it became apparent that the recorded sound was fairly remarkable.
Plays perfectly and after adjustment, records AMAZINGLY well w/ 1kHz at 0dB=0dB! on Maxell UDXL-II tapes.
Our 'Real World' test resulted in +2-3dB w/ Maxell UDXL-II tape with "HX-PRO" and Dolby-C engaged, and the Bias control set to ~9:00 O'clock.

Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit which involves complete removal and partial disassembly of the entire transport, cleaning inside and out, DISASSEMBLING, cleaning and re-lubricating all internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below.

Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work).

Head rotating gear inspected with a jewelers loop prior to starting any restoration work, and found to be 'hairline' crack free.

All 'reel drive' tires reconditioned for years of trouble-free service.

All new internal Drive and Counter belts replaced for years of trouble-free service.

Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned

Capstan burnished

Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

Head alignments and azimuth at both 1kHz and 10kHz adjusted for BOTH directions for 'peak performance' with O-Scope

All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

Both spindles in perfect alignment.

Heads are in great condition

Internal playback levels adjusted for even playback w/ alignment tape, Oscilloscope, and mVAC meter

Playback meters adjusted for 'playback' zero'd with factory test tone tape.

Internal Record amplifier channels adjusted for 'even output'

Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

Speed adjusted to 100% accuracy BOTH directions, with 1kHz factory calibration tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz)

Eject door operates smoothly.

ALL Tape Counter Functions tested

Dolby B & C NR circuits / function tested

'Memory / Zero Return' function tested

Cosmetics are LIKE NEW!

Plays perfectly and after adjustment, records very well at -1dB! on about any formulation of tape. We did 'test recordings' of Pink Noise and 'ddd' CD's on 6 tapes; Sony Normal Bias, Fuji Normal Bias, TDK Normal Bias, Maxell Normal Bias, TDK 'SA' High Bias, and Maxell 'XL-II' High Bias. We found that they all performed VERY well on this particular deck. We did however find that the deck likes to record at about -10dB on the meters, for 'smoother saturation' of tape. Again, we really didn't have a favorite, plus the deck has adjustable Bias (although we left it 'centered' for our tests).
Total technician time to restore 8+ HOURS!

Again, as mentioned above, our tech has gone through it completely cleaning all parts, controls and tape mechanism. We also checked, cleaned, reconditioned and / or replaced rubber components. We completely de-magnetized the heads and transport. Capstan motor speed adjusted to exact spec! Tape speed re-adjusted to 100% accuracy, ie; 1 kHz = 1 kHz! Test records incredibly well and plays back at -1 dB down!  Looks NEW and sounds great! Great for transferring your tape collection to CD, Hard-drive or MP3. Test plays and Records extremely well. Very clean deck and usable deck! Measures 17.25" w X 11" d X 5" h and unpacked weight is 10 lbs. Comes with our 90 day limited warranty.

Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

Transport was cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled

Tape Tension arms disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed, and their springs adjusted and had fresh 500,000 grade silicone lube gel applied

pinch-roller mechanism completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed,

 PR mechanism solenoid mounts adjusted

Capstans / flywheels removed, bushings and axels cleaned and re-lubed

Rubber pinch rollers removed, re-conditioned and re-installed with fresh lubricant

Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes also (optimized for 7" & 10.5" tape.)

Back tension adjusted on both reel motors.

All three motors test perfectly. Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" & 10.5" tapes (VERY QUICK FAST WIND ON THIS ONE)

Internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function

We adjusted the VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback and record levels.

 Both spindles in perfect alignment.

We also adjusted the reel table heights.

Heads are in great shape w/ very little wear observed. Many years of performance left in them.

Playback and Record Head alignment / azimuth was adjusted for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope.

Following refurb / service mechanicals tested for 'play torque' at beginning and end of largest size reels, as well as 'Fast wind torque' and 'braking tension' in both FF and REW, at beginning, middle and end of tapes. In other words, every combination of transport function was tested and passed.

Speed tested to 99.9+% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1000 +/- 1Hz).

Adjusted to record AMAZINGLY WELL at +2dB both with 1kHz, then 100Hz to 20kHz test and in 'Real World' use. (Tested with Ampex 456, Maxell UD 35-90, and Denon Tape). (We actually used it to record a fabulous copy of Pink Floyds, "Dark Side of the Moon", 'Live version' from their "Pulse" album for ourselves)

Floor noise measured at >-60dB w/ blank tape, L&R

This FOSTEX E-2 functions, plays, and records VERY WELL (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 10.5 hours).

This is an amazing deck for both recording or playback, again of 'Half-Track / 2-Track' tapes for speeds of 7.5ips or 15ips. Following refurbishment, the deck looks and works great!

The Fostex E-2 Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Ready to GO! This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Following our refurb / bench time it's now an AMAZING performer (Check the 'recording test results' above and the 'specs' in larger text below). If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25 % of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through with flying colors after about 11 hours of bench time.

The deck tests great! Cosmetically it's in good condition, with a few minor scuffs & scratches (see separate photo collage above). Looks decent and sounds great ! We have completely gone through it. Will play up to 10.5" reels.

Fostex E-2 Features include:

- Half-Track + (Cue / Sync) / 2-Track / 2-Channel w/ Center Track head stack / tape format
- 3 Heads for instant monitoring of tape levels while recording
- 10.5" Max Reel Capacity (The BIG Reels!)
- 3 Motors (NO BELTS) for trouble free performance (has a lot to do with it still being a viable piece of gear due to less rubber parts)
- IC logic tape transport for "Touch" control

- Dual speeds at 15ips / 38cms & 7.5 ips / 19cms
- Cue Lever for lifting tape away from head in Fast Wind modes

- Input (Source) / Repro (Monitor) selector independently for each channel
- Output level control for each channel
- Triple analog VU level meters
- Pitch Control
w/ 'touch sensitive' control to display speed variation by pct (%)
-
Digital Counter to display Hour, Min, Sec
- Tape Bias selector (however deck is factory biased for Ampex 456 Grand Master by default)
- Dual Memory Positions and Dual Locate positions can be set on counter (start points / stop points etc) + 'Auto-Return' point
- 'Tape Presence' sensor (for the 'auto-stop' mechanism)
- 'Dump Edit' function to disable transport for splicing

- VERY SECURE NAB hubs for 10.5 inch reels, and 'screw on' fasteners for 7" reels
- RCA and XLR 'Balanced' Line-Inputs for all three channels
- Punch-In / Punch-Out capability (with optional Fostex 8051 Foot Switch)
- Side 'Pocket' handles make carrying much easier (as it's almost 70 lbs!!!)

- Accessory connectors for optional Fostex 4030 Synchronizer via a 8540 cable, and Fostex 4050 'Auto-Locator with 8440 cable and a connector for an external Fostex MB-2 Meter Bridge

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning heads and all else, lubing, adjusting, reconditioning pinch rollers and other rubber parts, demagnetizing heads and entire transport and testing everything. Tape speed tested and resulted in 99.9% accuracy using a 1000 Hz test tape. Plays and records Exceptionally well (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed CD material and CD test tones looking for correct head Azimuth, tape speed accuracy and making test recordings. Again, check the 'test results' listed above). Pinch rollers and heads all in GREAT condition!!! Very clean and GREAT!

This is a GREAT looking deck with UNBELIEVABLE PERFORMANCE. Probably the best sounding deck I've had the pleasure to audition (tempting to keep this one for myself...YES, REALLY)
Again, as mentioned earlier, cosmetically it's in good condition, with a few minor scuffs & scratches (see separate photo collage above).  All of our restored / refurbished reel to reel decks come with a 7", plastic take-up reel, a 'known good' 7" tape for initial testing of playback, and a 7" tape you can record onto, all to assist you in becoming familiar with the operation / function of your new reel to reel tape deck.
Measures 19" wide x 20" tall x 11" (from tip of back feet-tip of hubs)
deep and weighs a HEAVY 66 lbs unpacked. Includes Rack Ears and original, Fostex NAB hubs for ALL tape sizes.  Comes with an 'e-copy' / pdf download of the

All are sometimes available separately if you need them. We do ship our decks with a plastic take-up reel, a tape to 'practice record' on and a 'pre-recorded' tape for playback.)

Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit which involves complete disassembly of the transport, cleaning inside and out, COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLING, cleaning and re-lubricating all internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below.

Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work).

All drive tires reconditioned for trouble-free service.

All new internal rubber belts replaced for trouble-free service. (a note about the 'belt kits' out there. We were out of a couple of the belts we needed, so to make it easy / quick, we thought we'd order a 'belt kit' from an ebay seller (yes, we should know better). We installed them, and went on with the restoration. At the first opportunity to do some testing during it's 'bench time', we noticed 'fast' WOW / 'slow' Flutter when recording test tones (especially prevalent with recording, then playing back 'Piano' music). After spending 'hours' trying to track down the issues, and in the interim we had 're-stocked' our normal belts, changed out the ebay purchased ones for our 'stock' units, and the problem was solved. That seller was selling 'round' belts ("round belts" typically shouldn't be an issue), but the Marantz 5220 deck MUST have 'Square' belts. Just FYI (at our expense).)

Rubber pinch roller reconditioned

Capstan burnished

Missing Capstan thrust screw replaced

Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

Head alignments and azimuth checked and adjusted as necessary for 'peak performance' with O-Scope

All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

All internal light bulbs changed

All internal displays and LED's working fine.

Both hub spindles in perfect alignment.

FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance.

Both Internal playback amplifier channels adjusted for 'even output'

Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric input.

Both Internal Record amplifier channels adjusted for 'even output'

Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

Playback meters zero with factory test tone tape.

Tape Counter and 'Memory' Function tested

Plays perfectly and records well @ ~0dB (with Maxell UDXL-II tapes @ 1kHz) and @ ~-2.5dB (with TDK D tapes with Pink Noise)( we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).

Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!! -Both level meters playback even.

Speed adjusted internally to 100% accuracy with 1kHz factory test tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz)

Face is made of beautiful brushed aluminum, and overall the deck is in fabulous cosmetic condition. Following the extensive restoration, we did 'test recordings' of a 'ddd' CD on 6 tapes; Sony Normal Bias, Fuji Normal Bias, TDK Normal Bias, Maxell Normal Bias, TDK 'SA' High Bias, and Maxell 'XL-II' High Bias. We found that TDK 'D' / Normal Bias tape performed the best on this particular deck.
Total technician time to restore ~16 HOURS! (12 Hours Tech time, then another 3-4 hours testing / evaluating)

From Marantz's Classic and always sought after, 'Blue Face' years. This is the first of Marantz cassette deck from this series that we've had make it through our process in over 21 years, and it was a 'long journey'. Marantz only made 3 'vertical' models of cassette decks, with the 'Smoked Plexi' look. The 5020 (lesser model), the 5200 (same as this deck, but without Dolby), and this 'Top of the Line' 2-Track, 5220! Mid-70's cassette deck with classic, Piano-Key transport operation, Dolby, stereo cassette tape deck. Great deck to add to your classic, brushed silver and 'Blue Face' Marantz 'stack or rack'.

Also great for transferring your tape collection to CD, Hard-drive or MP3. Includes original box and packing. Comes with an 'e-copy' / pdf of the Marantz 5220 owners manual.

Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit which involves complete disassembly of the transport (not an easy task on this table), cleaning inside and out, DISASSEMBLING, cleaning and re-lubricating all internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below.

Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work).

All 'reel drive' tires replaced for years of trouble-free service.

Both Rubber pinch rollers have been reconditioned

Capstan burnished

Both spindles in perfect alignment.

FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

Eject door operates smoothly.

Tape Counter Function tested

Dolby NR circuit tested

'Memory / Zero Return' function tested

Heads are in 'AS-NEW' condition, with NO visible wear!

Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric input.

Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

Both level meters playback even.

Speed adjusted to 100% accuracy with 1kHz factory calibration tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz)

Cosmetics are in essentially NEW condition. Deck works, sounds and looks great!

Plays perfectly and after our adjustment, records AMAZINGLY well at -0 dB! on High bias type tapes. The Maxell's did somewhat 'outshine' the TDK's for being able to 'over saturate' on the levels. While doing the test recording's, it became apparent that the recorded sound was fairly remarkable. Here's the deal. We sync'd up the recording we had just made, and the CD player and AB'd on our pre-amp between the CD and the Tape. Not only was there no 'level loss' (it's a cassette, there should have been!!!), but the tape actually had a bit more brilliance and 'natural' top end to it by a couple to 3 dB's!!!)
Total technician time to restore ~9 HOURS!
(this deck is actually from the 'personal stock' of our Senior Technician)

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Again, we have completely cleaned, prepped and tested this Nakamichi 480 cassette tape deck.
I would like to think that I have had plenty, but would be hard pressed to recall a cassette deck that records as well as this one does following the service regime it just had. Maybe I have gotten better at testing them, but regardless, this records about as 'perfectly' as possible (and I've had, owned and sold the best cassette decks ever made including Tascams 122mk III's, Nak Dragons, Nak CR-7's, Yamaha's, Denons, Onkyo's, Pioneer CT-F1250's and CT-F1000, and a few hundred more.)
Great for transferring your no NR or Dolby NR encoded tape collection to CD, Hard-drive or MP3. Built very well! Looks like new, works and sounds great.

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Again, as mentioned above, our tech has gone through it completely cleaning all parts, controls and tape mechanism. As mentioned, the power supply was originally not functioning correctly, so before restoration could commence, we replaced a faulty voltage regulator.
We also checked, cleaned, reconditioned and / or replaced rubber components. We completely de-magnetized the heads and transport. Capstan motor speed adjusted to exact spec! Tape speed re-adjusted to 100% accuracy, ie; 1 kHz = 1 kHz! And with it's service work completed the deck records incredibly well and plays back utilizing Maxell UD XL-II tapes at 0dB down! About the only cosmetic issue worth mentioning, is that there are some scratches to the black paint, on the top sheet metal housing. Probably from someone setting a unit on top of it that didn't have feet. Of course you only notice that when looking 'down from above' the deck, so in a rack, wouldn't be seen. Overall, the deck looks good and sounds great! Great for transferring your tape collection to CD, Hard-drive or MP3. Plays and Records extremely well. Very clean and usable deck! Includes a pdf / e-copy download of the Nakamichi BX-2 owners / users / instruction manual. Measures 17" w X 10" d X 4.25" h and unpacked weight is 13 lbs. Comes with our 90 day limited warranty.

Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

Everything was cleaned inside and out including all switches, controls and contacts.  We have completely gone through this unit restoring it for Record and Playback use.

Entire internal transport mechanism disassembled, cleaned of old grease, re-lubed, reassembled and adjusted to spec.

Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned. Main drive belt reconditioned.

  New counter belt installed.

Capstan and flywheel removed, cleaned, burnished, reinstalled and adjusted. Flywheel thrust bracket removed, bearing surface cleaned and re-lubed, then reinstalled and adjusted.

All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

Both playback level and meter level internal pots adjusted using factory service manual and test tones.

Bi-Directional function, levels and adjustments set to factory spec

Both spindles in perfect alignment and work perfectly with no missing fins.

Brake pads reconditioned on both sides and are in good shape.

Heads are in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked with factory 'STL' test tapes and an O-Scope for peak performance. Head alignment done w/ factory test tones @ 10k & 15kHz. Heads and entire transport cleaned electronically de-mag'd.

All internal relays (and theres a LOT of them in this deck) and solenoids checked for proper operation and contacts resurfaced where necessary.

Plays very well. We tested with a myriad of tapes once restoration was complete. This is a great sounding tape deck.

  Speed checked to 99.8% accuracy!

Cosmetically the deck looks great. Just over 12 hours invested in this decks refurb. Its READY TO GO!

Exceptional cosmetic condition, the Sansui SD-7000 features wood top and side panels and the hard-to-find clear front dust cover. While we've had a couple of Sansui SD-5000's in the past 16 years, this is the first Sansui SD-7000 we've had.
The transport is Solenoid-Assist-Soft-Touch for all functions and makes this deck a pleasure to use. Very 'positive' and 'solid' when switching between transport functions. This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer for recording or playing back your old reel to reel tapes. If you're looking for a professional quality reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25 % of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. Looks and sounds great! Will play 5"and 7" reels.

We have gone through this unit. Entire transport removed for service. Main capstan drive belt replaced as well as the counter belt. One great aspect of this deck is that it does not use a rubber 'tire' to drive the hubs, so it won't experience the typical fast wind issues that many decks have. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, capstan burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. All mechanics checked for proper function. All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function. All displays working fine. Both spindles in perfect alignment. FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls positively responsive on both decks. Tape loads accurately. Meters zero even with symmetric input. Floor noise on this particular one, measured at ~2.6mVAC on playback of blank tape w/ no NR engaged. Heads in "like new" shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been adjusted with factory test tones and an O-Scope for peak performance. Playback level adjusted for even output as well as the Meters adjusted for even levels on input and playback. Plays perfectly and records incredibly well with high quality, with the following results - Normal tape; No NR = 0dB.
(and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!! Both level meters playback even. Speed adjusted on capstan motor to 100% accuracy with 1kHz factory test tape (adjusting speed on this deck also requires removal of the entire transport to access the motor speed adjustment). Cosmetically the face and all control buttons, and the case in clean condition.

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Again, as mentioned above, our tech has gone through it completely cleaning all parts, controls and tape mechanism. We also checked, cleaned, reconditioned and / or replaced rubber components. We completely de-magnetized the heads and transport. Capstan motor speed adjusted to exact spec! Tape speed re-adjusted to 100% accuracy, ie; 1 kHz = 1 kHz! And with it's service work completed the deck records incredibly well and plays back at -2 dB down!  Cosmetically looks fine, just a few scuffs / scratches on the top, sheet metal cover (see photos above). Looks and sounds great!
Great for transferring your tape collection to CD, Hard-drive or MP3. Plays and Records extremely well. Very clean deck and usable deck! Includes a pdf / e-copy download of the Yamaha KR-720 owners / users / instruction manual (which you're gonna need to appreciate of of the function of this deck).

'Gear driven' hubs, so NO reel tires for trouble-free service.

Main drive / capstan belt replaced for years of trouble-free service.

Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned

Capstan burnished

Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. (Tech noted, "VERY minimal wear" to the heads on the work sheet)

Head alignments and azimuth at both 1kHz and 10kHz adjusted for BOTH directions for 'peak performance' with O-Scope

All 'user' potentiometers / controls removed, then cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

Speed adjusted to 100% accuracy BOTH directions, with 1kHz factory calibration tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1 Hz)

FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

Eject door operates smoothly.

ALL Tape Counter Functions tested

Dolby B, C & dbx NR circuits / function tested

'Memory / Zero Return' function tested

Cosmetics are decently clean, with typical, minor wear

Floor noise measured at -60dBm

Plays perfectly and after adjustment, records very well at -0.5 to -1dB! on most formulations of tape however, two did 'shine' over the rest of our test tapes. We did 'test recordings' of Pink Noise and 'ddd' CD's on 6 tapes; Sony Normal Bias, Fuji Normal Bias, TDK Normal Bias, Maxell Normal Bias, TDK 'SA' High Bias, and Maxell 'XL-II' High Bias. We found that they all performed VERY well on this particular deck (although the Fuji DR-1 definitely came up 'last'). The Sony HF 'Normal Bias' did very well with both PN and ddd CD at -.5dB w/ no NR. It exhibited good saturation capabilities with minimal 'high end' loss. It recorded at -6dB w/ dbx engaged, but that was from a starting point of more than +10dB on the meters. Dolby B was -2 and C was -2. Maxell UDXL-II was at -1.5dB with PN, but with ddd CD and no NR it exhibited great recording at -1.0dB with GREAT high end retention. dbx was at -6dB down, but again, that was from a ++10dB starting point. Bottom line is it makes GREAT recordings.
Total technician time to restore 8+ HOURS!

Yes, we know, EVERYTHING (at least all the Reel to Reel decks) are SOLD OUT currently.
We will be posting more in the future.
We are currently focusing resources on expanding our Tape Deck 'Parts Department' AND 'refurbished' Tape Decks sell faster than we can get them refurbished, and it's a slow process getting them ready.

CLICK HERE TO SEE OUR TAPE DECKS CURRENTLY FOR SALE!

We will be getting more machines ready over the next few days to a couple weeks, but it is a slow process, as every 20+ year old Reel to Reel tape deck requires 10-18 hours of service to be brought back to "usable" condition. Check back often as they will sell out quickly!
