Great cosmetic condition Akai 4000DB. Wood grain, vinyl wrapped wood cabinet and cover. This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer for playing back your old reel to reel tapes. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. Looks and sounds great! This is a Solid State, not tube unit. Will play 5"and 7" reels.

Looks GREAT & is "Ready-to-go"! Will play / record stereo 1/4" tapes on reels 3, 5 & 7". This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through and all functions test great! Looks and sounds great too!
Deck looks good with only a few minor cosmetic issues. There is a small strip of wood grained, Formica missing from top edge of cabinet (has been stained so not really distracting), some 'blemishes' on the transport levers, and some scuffs around the head cover and head selector (see photos above). And again, following the extensive refurbishment listed above, the deck works and sounds great!

Akai 4000D MK-II Features include:

- 4-Track / 2-Channel
- One-Micron Gap Head
- 3*, 5*", & 7" Reel Capacity (*compatible with standard 4-Track / 2-Channel tape format)

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning, lubing, adjusting, demagnetizing and testing everything. Plays and records perfectly following our full service, AGAIN, records at -1dB down, yes, that's within ONE Db of ZERO!
Deck looks good with only a few minor cosmetic issues mentioned above.  And again, following the extensive refurbishment listed above, the deck works and sounds great!
These are great machines from Akai, and this is one of the 50% of Akai's that have the 'later / improved' 'transport cam dogs' that resist disintegration (our tech noted that the transport cams in this unit are "like new".
Includes a pdf / 'e-copy' download of the Akai GX-4000DS MK-II Owners manual and Brochure, and if desired, a copy of the Akai GX-4000DS MK-II Service manual. Measures 16" wide x 7.75" deep x 13.5" high and weighs 25 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately if you need them. We do ship our decks with a plastic take-up reel, a tape to 'practice record' on and a 'pre-recorded' tape for playback.)

We've been 'sitting' on this deck along with a few other 'difficult / performance critical' decks for a few years now, waiting until we had a technician with sufficient skills to 'do them justice' and realize their top potential performance. Sure we have been able to do more 'bread-n-butter' decks for years, such as Akai 150 / 210 / 1700 / 1800 / 4000 series, Sony TC-100, 300 & 300 series, Teac A-4010 / 6010 series, Pioneer RT-707's and 909's (yes, great looking and darn good performing decks, but I hate to 'burst your bubble', but while they have proven to be a 'durable' design 30 years after they were discontinued, they're no where near the best performing decks as R2R's go, sorry) and others, but chose not to 'tackle' these. Well, now by a stroke of luck, we have 'him'. Our 'new to us' technician is able to really 'do justice' to decks such as this. Yes, he's expensive and it's time consuming, but AS ALWAYS, we are striving for TOP quality and not for 'cheap'. If you want 'cheap' there are plenty of 'as found' decks out there to 'roll the dice' on. Our new technician spent much of the 1970's managing the service department of the famous Pacific Stereo chain, then on to their 'Recycle Audio' division. Heck, the guy even 'co-invented' the optical mouse (you're probably using one right now). He's our guy to restore decks such as this!

Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit. We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit. Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled. Flywheel was removed, cleaned and reinstalled with silicone lube on flywheel thrust plate bearing. The capstan was burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Again, the entire transport assembly was painstakingly disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed as well as the always at issue, 'Pinch Roller swing arm' assembly. 'Auto-Stop' mechanism disassembled and re-lubed with fresh 300,000 silicon damping fluid. Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, and adjusted on fast wind modes also. Rewind 'back tension' adjusted. Motor 'start / run' capacitors checked. Voltage selector set for correct North American AC current at 117-120VAC. All internal pots / controls cleaned in both the playback amplifier, record amplifiers and the built-in 'audio' amp and tested for noise-free function. New VU meter and direction indicator illumination lamps / bulbs installed. Both spindles were completely disassembled, cleaned and had their bearings / bushings cleaned and re-lubed and are in perfect alignment. Main Drive and counter belts replaced for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller was removed, cleaned & reconditioned. We also adjusted the reel table heights. Tape heads and entire transports demagnetized.
Heads in Like New shape as well, with many hundreds of hours of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL 30Hz, 50Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 500Hz, 1k, 2.5k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k, 12k & 15k as well as 700Hz 'reference' tones thru an oscilloscope and with a dBm meter and were charted
(we have the full L&R, Forward and Reverse, Normal and 'High Bias' results charted and available to the purchaser, but too much typing to display here as it's over 100 documented results). Suffice to say, this unit Plays and Records INCREDIBLY WELL starting with the following results using 'High-Bias' tape, from 200Hz with -1dB & from 0dB to +1dB 1k to 15kHz!!! We further tested it at -1.5dB @ 20kHz and -5dB at 35kHz. YES, you read that right! All the way to 35kHz. AND the above results were referenced at '0' dB on the meters, not the typical and EASY -20dB!
Both PB output levels and VU meters playback internally adjusted for even response. Floor noise measured at 0.4mVAC at idle and 1.7mVAC with blank tape in play mode. (Akai GX-260D's do have a DC surge / thump at turn-on, by design, so keep the volume on your amp / receiver down or off, or speakers 'Off' during power-up sequence.)
We really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition. Speed tested / checked to 98.4% accuracy utilizing 'Institute of High Fidelity' test tape. Following electro/mechanical restoration, unit received a cosmetic cleaning / detailing. There are a couple of chips to the side panel Formica, but nothing too distracting (see above photos). Overall looks fine.
Entire unit looks, works and sounds GREAT!
(Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 16+ hours). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

GREAT performing Akai GX-260D 1/4" Open Reel stereo tape deck! Great for all-around Playback and especially recording of reels up to 7" in diameter. This deck has some very 'sonic specific' features, and while it would make a great deck for burning your tapes to CD or Hard Drive or for a 'media transfer business', we hope it will go to someone who will utilize and appreciate it's incredible recording capabilities. Some of the aspects that make it 'stand above the crowd' for recording,
The core of GX heads is comprised of a single crystallized element “single crystal ferrite” which has proved far superior to ‘poly-ferrite’ in that there are no minute ‘composite particles’ to eventually separate and cause head gap damage (wear). This is why Akai heads are famously said to ‘NOT WEAR OUT’.

Center Capstan Drive – Most Auto Reverse decks, (and frankly, most ‘single direction decks’) place the PR/Capstan drive assembly asymmetrically. This creates ‘un-even’ drag and friction on the tape as it travels it’s path. One the GX-260D, the PR / Cap is situated symmetrically in the center of identical head clusters, with an even amount of flanking contact points. This greatly reduces tape friction, which not only ensure identical performance in both directions, but contributes greatly to the models incredibly low ‘Wow & Flutter’ (check the specs @ 0.06%!).
Also, as the heads are stationary, normal ‘head misalignment’ issues common with many ‘auto-reverse’ decks are not an issue on the GX-260D.
As a further testament to the quality of Akai’s motors, Akai was originally a manufacturer of motors in Japan before entering the 'tape deck' business. They had the ‘motor thing’ down!

ü  Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü
We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü Pinch-roller ‘Lift Mechanism’ completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

ü Capstans burnished

ü Impedance roller removed, bushings and axels cleaned and re-lubed

ü Rubber pinch rollers have been properly resurfaced and then re-conditioned

ü Brand new counter belts installed #040 & #042

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Power supply CB adjusted to correct 24VDC which enables best performance from Cap motor, Playback and Record amp circuits (slightly low Voltage was originally causing a slight 'low record' situation on the left channel. Also repaired shorted diode on 'Servo' cb.

ü All three motors test perfectly. Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" and 10.5" tapes

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes on both 7.5” and fully loaded 10.5” reels from top speed.

ü Internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü We adjusted the VU meters electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback and record levels.

ü Both spindles in great alignment.

ü Slight 'flutter' issue was improved by 'truing' capstan more accurately

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights.

ü Heads have virtually no appreciable, visible wear.

ü  Recording tests performed with Maxell UDXL-II tape. Here’s how it tested at 0dB; 1kHz / L= ~-1.5dB & R= ~-1.75dB

ü  Floor noise measured at >-60dBm

ü This Akai GX-630D functions, plays, and records perfectly (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 16.5+ hours).

ü Face is made of beautiful brushed aluminum and is in great condition. Deck looks and works great!

Looks GREAT & is "Ready-to-go"! The very sought after Akai GX-630D Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Will play / record stereo 1/4" tapes on reels 5, 7 & 10.5". This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. This one made it through and all functions test great! If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. Heads have no appreciable, visible wear, check the record test results above, evidence they’re sounding great! Recordings sound FANTASTIC on this unit now. Looks essentially NEW (just a couple little 'tics' on the head cover) and sounds great too! As touched on above, the heads are in beautiful condition. Spindle tridents are in great condition with strong springs, and no cracks, splits or broken spines.

Akai GX-630D Features include:

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

This unit has its fair share of 'battle scars' and up close, isn't going to win any beauty contests, but...

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü
We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü Pinch-roller ‘Lift Mechanism’ completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

ü Capstans burnished

ü Impedance roller removed, bushings and axels cleaned and re-lubed

ü Rubber pinch rollers have been properly resurfaced and then re-conditioned

ü Brand new counter belts installed #039 & #042

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Missing skids replaced with 'oversize' feet.

ü Replaced AC line cord

ü Originally missing 'Monitor' switch replaced with an original / OEM switch from another GX-630D.

ü Power supply CB adjusted to correct 24VDC which enables best performance from Cap motor, Playback and Record amp circuits (slightly low Voltage was originally causing a slight 'low record' situation on the left channel. Also repaired shorted diode on 'Servo' cb.

ü All three motors test perfectly. Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" and 10.5" tapes

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes on both 7.5” and fully loaded 10.5” reels from top speed.

ü Internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü We adjusted the VU meters electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback and record levels.

ü Deck has been fully calibrated, tested, and found to perform well.

ü Both spindles in decent alignment. The 'Supply' spindle has a bit of run-out, but nothing that affects performance.

ü All 4 tape guides rotated 180 degrees to present 'fresh' surface to tape.

ü Slight 'flutter' issue was improved by 'truing' capstan more accurately

ü 'Record' lamps replaced with new 24VDC bulbs

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights.

ü Heads have virtually no appreciable, visible wear.

ü Recording tests performed. Here’s how it tested at 0dB;
with Maxell UDXL-II tape: 1kHz = ~-2.5dB L&R
with Ampex GM-456 tape: 1kHz = ~+1.5dB L & ~+0.5dB R
with TDK Audua tape: 1kHz = ~-3.5dB L & ~-2.5dB R

ü Speed tested to 99.8% accuracy with 1kHz factory test tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1002Hz +/- 1Hz)

ü  Floor noise measured at >-60dBm

ü This Akai GX-630D functions, plays, and records perfectly (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 30 hours).

Heads have no appreciable, visible wear, check the record test results above, evidence they’re sounding great!
So there's a 'laundry list' of minor, cosmetic issues with this unit, and there's a separate photo collage above that shows them, but here's the list;
Wood grain, vinyl wrapped case has numerous chips / dings, and a nice cigarette burn on top. The face has crescent reel flange marks (those are actually fairly common on many machines). The pinch roller is missing it's hub cap. There some scratches under the capstan. The head cover has numerous scratches and some 'yellow' staining (wouldn't come off). There's some light corrosion under the meters on the aluminum bezels. The 'supply' reel spindle has the outermost, end of it's tip chipped off (still functionally fine). The rear vent panel, has been replaced with a non-original one. The originally missing skids have been replaced with oversize feet (actually a 'good thing').

As touched on above, the heads are in beautiful condition. Spindle tridents are in great condition with strong springs, and no cracks, splits or broken spines.

Akai GX-630D Features include:

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning, lubing, adjusting, demagnetizing and testing everything. Plays and records perfectly, AGAIN, records ~0 to -3.5dB @ 1kHz depending on what type of 'Quality' tape you use. Lesser quality tapes will likely result in drastically lower levels!

These are great machines. I have had this one myself for years. It's a blast to put on a BIG 10.5" reel with Pink Floyds, "Dark Side of the Moon".
Also includes our normal accessory kit that includes a 'Play-Back Demo' made on the deck, a 7" plastic take-up reel, and a couple of other assorted 7" tapes to play with.

Original observations / conditions:
"Very dirty outside. Noticeable wear to tape guide pins. Playback un-even from L to R. Tape 'skews' off pinch roller after a few moments of playback regardless of tape progress. Records several dB down. "Rattle / noise" when motor running, found to be too much longitudinal movement in capstan / flywheel. Transport cam dogs in good shape. Fast Wind reluctant to start depending on progress thru tape."

ü Our technician has EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Transport 'cam dogs' on this deck are the 'later' versions and resistant to deterioration (MUCH UNLIKE most other Akai decks)

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was removed / disassembled, cleaned, re-lubed with synthetic lube and reassembled.

ü pinch-roller mechanism completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Capstan & flywheel removed, bushings and axel cleaned and re-lubed

ü Flywheel repositioned on capstan axle as it had moved and was allowing adjusting nut to touch flywheel before the ball bearing did.

ü Flywheel thrust bracket removed, bearing surface cleaned and re-lubed, then reinstalled and adjusted.

ü Capstan burnished

ü Internal drive wheels / tires removed, and resurfaced

ü Both spindle hubs disassembled, rubber tires cleaned and reconditioned, clutches cleaned and re-textured, bushings & axles re-lubed and re-assembled. This is necessary on Akai's to eliminate 'chatter' and 'Fast-Wind slowing' near end of "fast-wind" function on each side. Also speeds up Fast-Wind throughout the length of the tape.

ü Drive motor inspected, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Knurled drive pulley cleaned of old rubber residue

ü Pinch roller removed, resurfaced / reconditioned, and lubed prior to re-install

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Brake pads cleaned / reconditioned

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü Back tension adjusted on both reel tables.

ü Brand new, FR 13.4 'Main' drive / capstan belt installed

ü Brand new 'Tape Counter' belt installed

ü All transport functions now test perfectly, following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" tapes

ü Internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment, with minimal wobble and no missing fins

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights.

ü Meter lamps replaced with new #25-500

ü Heads cleaned and de-magnetized (as well as entire transport) and are in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them.

ü Mic / Line control pots cleaned for static free performance

ü Deck has been fully calibrated to factory manual specs adjusting PB levels, Meter adjustments, Bias / Frequency adjustments (VC1& VC2), and internal record levels, tested, with Nortronics, Panasonic, Sony, Soundcraft, STL, TEAC and BRL alignment / test tapes (see resulting record level listed below). Biased best for Ampex GM456 / ATR Reference tape and records on Maxell UD also very well. Best performance when recording at -2dB (most manufactures test at -20dB).

ü Speed tested to .996% accuracy (1kHz = 1.004kHz)

ü Floor noise measured at >-74dBu following above procedures

ü Following the above work and calibration, Recording tests performed with Ampex GM456 (again, same formulation as new ATR tape) and Maxell UD (Gold / Black) Tapes.
Here’s the results;
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +3dB L & R (best to record @ -3dB on 'Source')
GM 456 @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = -2dB L & R (engaging "EQ" adds +5dB L&R)

We then tested Ampex GM456 with Recorded program from "ddd" source extensively and deck performed well.
I know that a 'copy' CANNOT sound better than the source, but I swear that repeated recordings seemed to be "fuller" sounding than the 'source' material.

ü This Akai GX-4000D functions, plays, and records perfectly (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 16 hours).
Tech noted on work sheet; "Transport on this one is 'LIKE NEW'! inside"

Deck looks good with hardly anything to make mention of cosmetically. Maybe a bit of discoloration to the face metal if the light is angled just right, and a couple little 'tics' near the capstan. And again, following the extensive refurbishment listed above, the deck works and sounds great!

Deck looks VERY good, and again, following the extensive refurbishment listed above, the deck works and sounds great!
These are great machines from Akai, and this is one of the 50% of Akai's that have the 'later / improved' 'transport cam dogs' that resist disintegration (our tech noted that the transport cams in this unit are "like new"). Comes with proper, 7.5ips speed sleeve.

Original issues observed (mostly the
issues common with all 40 year old tape decks):
"power switch not working correctly, broken eject switch lever, sluggish fast wind, noisy internal record switches, noisy level controls, PB and REC levels low and un-matched, clutches slipping way too much to be usable, L-Channel Bias way out. Pinch rollers have un-even wear. Missing one input level knob."

ü Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit which involves complete disassembly of the transport (not an easy task on this table), cleaning inside and out, COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLING, cleaning and re-lubricating all internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below.

ü Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work, although as these are 'GX' heads, it would be pretty hard to put much 'wear' on them). These have virtually NO visible wear to them.

ü Internal DC power supply tested

ü Capstan motor disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

ü Both Flywheel belt surfaces solvent cleaned

ü Bronze Flywheel bushings solvent cleaned

ü Both Flywheel thrust pads cleaned

ü Capstan burnished

ü Reel drive tires (7 IN ALL!!!) replaced and / or reconditioned for trouble-free service. (These are actually much more important to replace on this deck (and most) than the belts. Without these, the deck won't fast wind very well, and will likely 'eat tapes' as the 'take-up' reel won't turn properly)

ü New internal Capstan Drive belt (#FRM9.2) installed for trouble-free service. (so this operation required extensive effort. The belts that came in the so called "correct kit" currently available for the Akai GXC-730D, proved to cause incorrect speed in two different decks. We were then forced to find new belts that by 'trial and error' allowed enough 'traction' and the most speed accuracy. In fact, none of the belts in the 'official kit' that is currently available for an Akai GXC-730D allowed the deck to operate at anything resembling correct speed when tested on a frequency counter with factory test tapes!)

ü New Counter belt (#.041) installed as well as 'spindle' belt #029.

ü Both hub spindles clutches were slipping and / or causing 'chatter'. Both were disassembled, shims added, compression springs adjusted, pads and plates re-surfaced, lubed where necessary and re-installed. (This was by far one of the more time consuming aspects to restoring this deck!)

ü Replaced broken Eject paddle button from another GXC-730D donor unit

ü Replaced non-repairable Power switch assembly from another GXC-730D donor unit

ü Replaced missing input level knob from another GXC-730D donor unit (some surface scratches to the replacement knob)

ü Rubber pinch rollers have been reconditioned

ü Tape well door pins re-aligned / re-worked / repaired

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Head alignments and azimuth checked and adjusted as necessary for 'peak performance' with O-Scope. As it's an 'Auto-Reverse' deck, these adjustments are required separately FOR BOTH DIRECTIONS!

ü All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Head swivel for Auto-Reverse disassembled, cleaned and lubed as it was stiff to move (this was one of the more time consuming operations for this deck).

ü Both d'arsonoval VU meters static adjusted, tested and working fine.

ü Both VU meter illumination lamps replaced w/ #25-445 6.3V / 250mA.

ü Both VU Direction illumination lamps replaced w/ 4 new bulbs.

ü Both hub spindles NOW in perfect alignment.

ü FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for positive / accurate responsive.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance.

ü Playback meters zero adjusted 'electronically' with factory test tone tape.

ü Tape Counter Function tested

ü Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

ü Floor noise tested to -60dBm with empty shell tape

ü Speed tested to 98% accuracy with 1kHz factory test tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 980 Hz +/- 1Hz)

Only issue still remaining is that "Fast Wind" will slow more than typical as it nears completion of a side. This cannot be improved anymore, and still does an adequate job.

ü Deck has had just over 23 hours of restoration work done.

Face is made of beautiful brushed aluminum, and overall the deck is in great cosmetic condition. One of the input level knobs has a few scuffs as mentioned above. Following the extensive restoration, we did 'test recordings' of a 'ddd' CD on 2 tapes; Maxell Normal Bias, TDK 'SA' High Bias, and Maxell 'XL-II' High Bias. We found that both the "Maxell's" performed VERY well on this particular deck.

ü Plays great and records well with 1kHz, recorded 0dB playing back @ L=-2dB & R=-2dB on Maxell UDXL-II tapes. With DDD CD we experienced ~ -3 to -4dB, but great, overall sonics! (we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).

ü Recording tests performed with Maxell Normal Bias and Maxell High-Bias UDXL-II (Gold / Black) Tapes.
Here’s the results;

Maxell UDXL-II: 1KhZ with Dolby & CrO2 position @ 0dB = -2dB L & -2dB R with virtually no artifacts
Maxell UDXL-II: 1KhZ W/O Dolby & CrO2 position @ 0dB = -2dB L & -2dB R with virtually no artifacts
Maxell UDXL-II: 1KhZ with Dolby & Normal position @ 0dB = -2.5dB L & -3dB R with virtually no artifacts
Maxell UDXL-II: 1KhZ W/O Dolby & Normal position @ 0dB = -2.5dB L & -2dB R with virtually no artifacts
Recorded program from "ddd" source @ 0dB sounds great as well. It's nice recording on a deck that's 'dialed in' properly)

Total technician time to restore ~28+ HOURS!

ü Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit which involves complete disassembly of the transport (not an easy task on this table), cleaning inside and out, COMPLETELY DISASSEMBLING, cleaning and re-lubricating all internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below.

ü Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work, although as these are 'GX' heads, it would be pretty hard to put much 'wear' on them). These have virtually NO visible wear to them.

ü Internal DC power supply tested

ü Capstan motor disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

ü Both Flywheel 'belt surfaces' solvent cleaned

ü Bronze Flywheel bushings solvent cleaned

ü Both Flywheel thrust pads cleaned

ü Capstan burnished

ü 'Reel drive' tires (7 IN ALL!!!) reconditioned for trouble-free service.

In fact, none of the belts in the 'official kit' that is currently available for an Akai GXC-730D allowed the deck to operate at anything resembling correct speed when tested on a frequency counter with factory test tapes!)

ü New 'Counter' belt (#.041) installed as well as 'spindle' belt #029.

ü 'Non-locking' 'Pause' control disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Rubber pinch rollers have been reconditioned

ü Tape well door 'eject' springs re-worked / repaired

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Head alignments and azimuth checked and adjusted as necessary for 'peak performance' with O-Scope

ü All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both d'arsonoval VU meters 'static adjusted', tested and working fine.

ü Both VU meter illumination lamps replaced.

ü Both hub spindles in perfect alignment.

ü FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance.

ü Replaced 'Erase Head', reed switch with OEM from another of the same model (very difficult to deduce and locate as source of issue with deck 'not erasing' correctly)

ü Playback meters zero adjusted 'electronically' with factory test tone tape.

ü Tape Counter Function tested

ü Plays perfectly and records well with 1kHz, recorded 0dB playing back @ L=-2dB & R=-3.5dB (between TDK and Maxell tapes). With DDD CD we experienced ~ -5 to -6dB, but great, overall sonics! (we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).

ü Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

ü Floor noise tested to -60dBm with empty shell tape

ü Speed tested to 98% accuracy with 1kHz factory test tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 980Hz +/- 1Hz)

Only issue still remaining is that "Rewind" is noisy on some tapes as it nears completion.

ü Deck has had just over 18.5 hours of restoration work done.

Face is made of beautiful brushed aluminum, and overall the deck is in NEW cosmetic condition. Following the extensive restoration, we did 'test recordings' of a 'ddd' CD on 6 tapes; Sony Normal Bias, Fuji Normal Bias, TDK Normal Bias, Maxell Normal Bias, TDK 'SA' High Bias, and Maxell 'XL-II' High Bias. We found that for Normal and High Bias, of those tapes tested, both the "Maxells" performed VERY well on this particular deck.
Total technician time to restore ~18.5 HOURS!

Circa 1970-72

SOLD 5/26/20
SHIPPED TO BOB IN COLORADO

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü
We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, de-greased, and re-lubed including; Pinch Roller Pivot Arm, EOT Sensor Arm, Left Tape Tension arm mechanism, Capstan Motor (disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed w/ 30wt), Capstan and flywheel shaft removed cleaned / re-lubed w/30wt (pretty much every moving part)

ü Transport cams checked for usable condition prior to any work starting (here in the West, we have less of an issue with the typical deterioration that you see in more 'humid' climates such as the Mid-West, South and Coasts (be very careful getting an Akai from the early to mid 1970's that has spent most of it's life in a 'humid' environment).

ü Entire 8-Track transport assembly was removed and disassembled for service, including burnishing it's connector, and track selector contacts.

ü Motor completely disassembled, cleaned, & re-lubed

ü Voltage re-set to correct 120VAC

ü Circuit board edge card contacts and connectors burnished w/ solvent and fiberglass pen

ü Tape Tension arms disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed, and their springs adjusted

ü Reel table height correct

ü pinch-roller 'arm' mechanism completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Capstan / flywheel removed, bushings and axles cleaned and re-lubed and flywheels burnished

ü Capstan motor pulley burnished

ü Capstan cleaned (as well as the internal and external surfaces of the original speed sleeve)

ü ALL Internal idler tires cleaned / reconditioned

ü Rubber pinch roller removed and re-conditioned

ü New MAIN drive belt, #FR13.4 installed

ü Brand new counter belt, #047 installed

ü Repaired faulty motor 'Speed Switch' that was causing motor run intermittency

ü Repaired damaged internal wire insulation from previous service

ü Repaired Tape EQ switch

ü Repaired Cart / Reel selector switches

(Note; these units have numerous internal switches other than what seems to be the obvious / visible ones upon initial disassembly. Most switches have ADDITIONAL switches located further inside unit, connected with linkages that also must be serviced. We've done a few of these now, and you learn.)

ü Replaced 'Track Change' relay, 1000uf electrolytic capacitors on 8-track transport board for quieter track changes

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport (reel and 8-Track Cartridge).

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes at ALL points thru a tape. It's a fine line between having the brakes actuate with too much tension, 'abruptly' stopping the tape (risking stretching / breaking of tape) or too loose (allows tape to 'dump'). (VERY difficult to do on this series). Brakes optimized for 7" reels.

ü Motor torque test perfectly. Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" reels.

ü Internal pots, switches (including linear record switch and 'rotary wafer' switches) and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function (initially, of course, had typical static / noise which is to be expected in an 'un-serviced' deck after 45+ years) (also a bit easier on this "Type-C" version. Just FYI).

ü External / User adjustable pots, switches and controls cleaned on the playback / record amp and tested for noise-free function

(tech notes; Line out set to 0dB using 0dB reference @ 700Hz. Vol controls @ approx 1:30)

ü Replaced VU meter lamps / bulbs #25-080

ü Cleaned 8-Track cartridge heads

ü We adjusted the VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback levels for both directions independently and record levels.

ü We adjusted the output, 'Minimum Input', 'Specified Input', 'Record Level' and 'Bias' all to spec, then further adjusted 'Bias' for Ampex GM-456

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them

ü Playback and Record Head alignment / azimuth was adjusted for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope.

ü Speed tested to 99.3% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1007Hz +/- 2Hz. {well within spec by 7Hz!}).

ü Reel Tape deck adjusted to record VERY WELL. Biased for Ampex GM 456 studio tape @ 0dB!!!

ü 'Real World, DDD CD recorded sounds great w/ Ampex GM456.

ü 'Electronic' Floor noise measured at >-60dB w/ blank tape, L&R.

ü Motor had a slight amount of run-out detected at the belt pulley (side to side movement / play) which causes excessive, ambient noise, so we swapped it with another of the exact motor (we had a 'donor unit'), which was then also, completely disassembled, cleaned and lubed w/ 30W.

(tech notes; internal amp tests well w/ ~ 1mVDC across outputs w/ 8 Ohm load. Also as a side note, the Akai X-1800SD C-Type utilizes the same output transistors as the later Akai X-1810.)

ü This AKAI X-1800SD functions, plays, and R2R portion records VERY WELL (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). Unfortunately, while the "8-Track" tape deck plays VERY WELL, we were not able to get it to record, and didn't want to 'chase' it indefinitely thus raising the final price disproportionally (Total time investment in refurb process / and final testing ~ 32 hours).

The AKAI X-1800SD Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Ready to GO! This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through with flying colors after about 21 hours of bench time.

Following mechanical / electronic refurb, entire unit was cosmetically detailed inside and out. Face is made of aluminum and is dent free and in great condition. Cabinet covered in real TEAK wood veneer, is in decent condition with just a few 'battle scars', mostly to the 'top' side of the wood case (see photos above) and just had a fresh coat of Howards 'Restore a Finish' and followed Howards 'Feed-n-Wax'. All the case hardware intact and working, and had all it's fasteners torqued down. Deck looks and sounds great!

Looks great & "Ready-to-go"  AKAI X-1800SD Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Very 'famous' and popular reel tape deck. Many of the folks stationed overseas in the military during Viet Nam that purchased a Reel to Reel came back with an 1800SD (or one of it's siblings). Unfortunately of course, 50 years has not been kind to Akai Reel decks (or any electro-mechanical devices that are 20 years old or older). The internal lubes were never meant to last that long, certainly without maintenance, and 'rubber' doesn't 'age well' either, thus requiring the above stated work. There's also the Akai Transport cams that need to be inspected for their degree of condition and replaced if necessary (difficult and potentially expensive). We've already inspected them for any detrimental issues and certified them ready to go. Will play & Record stereo 1/4" tapes on reels up to 7". This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" then here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through. Playback & transport functions test great and records well! 8-Track, built-in amp and speakers all work great as well. Looks and sounds great too!
Another note I'd like to make is that the 8-Track is probably the BEST I've ever auditioned (and we've done A LOT of 8-Track decks, and I used to sell them when NEW).

AKAI X-1800SD Features include:

- 4-Speed
* Reel to Reel, 8-Track Cartridge deck w/ built-in speakers and amp
- DURABLE AC powered capstan motor (While "AC" Capstan motors generally have a bit more 'mechanical noise' that is typically noticeable in quieter environments, they are known for lasting decades longer than the DC capstan motors of the 'later' models)
- Up to 7" reel capacity (while you could go down as far as 3" in diameter, the torque and braking on this deck has been optimized for 7"reels)
- Akai's "Cross-Field" Bias Head, gets the tape 'bias signal' off of the 'Record' head (so the 'Record Head' can be concentrated only on recording the 'music' signal) and biases with a separate head
- One-Micron Gap Recording Head (reel)
- Stereo or MONO playback / recording (reel tape) (means that in "MONO" mode, you can record 4 separate passes on a tape or playback tapes made on older decks that did 'four separate tracks')
- Quad speeds at 7.5 ips / 19cms (with included speed sleeve adapter), 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms,1 7/8 ips / 4.8 cms &
*15 ips / 38cms (requires optional 15ips kit, not available from us.
- As it's got its own, Built-in Power amp and speakers, it can be used as a 'stand alone' unit. (very handy for a media transfer business setting up another 'station' without a stereo / audio system)
- Stereo playback / recording 8-Track Cartridge tape
- Continuous Play or 'End of Tape' Stop for 8-Track (however at this point the 'Auto-Stop' does not seem to recognize the 'sensor' tape on 8-tracks so only does "Continuous Play" at the end of track #4)
- 8-Track 'Track Selector' w/ typical indicator lights
- Auto-Off for Reel deck
- Can also transfer from Reel tape to 8-Track Cartridge tape
*
- Built-in 'Tape Cleaner' pad (can also lube 'back coated' tapes so they don't squeak if you can obtain the correct silicone lube. No, we don't know where to get it at this point...yet)
- Dual front mounted 1/4" Microphone inputs
- Side mounted 1/4" Headphone jack
- RCA and DIN I/O's
- Separate L&R Input / Volume controls
- Separate L&R Tone controls (for built-in amp)
- Internal Speaker On/Off switch (Auto switches when using 'External' speakers)

- NOT an OFFICIAL feature, BUT one function this deck will allow is a sort of CUE by slightly pushing up on the 'pause' lever, while the deck is in play, you can get a 'variable speed' CUE function. You'll either need to very gradually release the pressure or with your other hand move the 'Play' lever to 'Stop' when you reach the spot you wanted to 'cue to' or the tape will track off the front edge of the pinch roller. Takes a bit of practice to get it right.

(
*15 ips ONLY w/ optional speed sleeve / pinch roller kit (not typically avail. The 15ips was utilized for transferring Reel tape signals to the 8-Track tape. While the Reel deck could record at 15ips, there's not a 15ips Tape EQ setting, which may or may not be detrimental to your needs)
-True "WORLD AC POWER"™ allows unit to be operated on 50 or 60 Hz AC and will select voltages from 110v, 120v, 220v and 240 volts AC input.

This is only the second AKAI X-1800SD we restored in ~24 years. Great machine for playback / archiving your tapes to CD or Hard Drive or for recording new tapes. This is a beautiful deck. Performs incredibly well following extensive refurbishing. The wood case is in great 'structural' condition. It exhibits the typical and expected finish fading / checking / dings. The decks face, knobs, covers and all cosmetics are fabulous!

This machines 'Forte' would be best suited for a 'media transfer' business, especially where you have a bench / station that doesn't have dedicated sound system (as it's go it's own, built-in amp and speakers) or for someone who has a lot of tapes to preview prior to sending for transfer, or for a library or university with a lot of tapes of different speeds / and track formats to transfer. If you're going to be listening to 'quiet, chamber' music while reading, the "AC powered" motor / fan noise could be noticable while 'casually' listening to quiet passages of music. If you tend to like the volume at more than 'low, back ground' levels, then you'll not likely notice "AC powered motor" hum. There is a bit of "60 cycle" hum on the outputs (typical again, of earlier, AC motored decks) that will be noticeable if you have the decks outputs above about "3:00 O'clock" / 75% of the way up, your pre-amp is above 11:00 O'clock (almost 'half way') up and the deck is in 'Pause' or playing a very quiet passage of music. Probably won't be noticed in most playing situations. If you're utilizing if for 'media transfers', you can simply turn on a 60 Hz filter in the software to remove / reduce it. If you have a graphic EQ, you can do the same, again, if you have the deck and your volume both turned very high.

Measures 13.5" wide x 15" tall x 9.5" deep and weighs 38 lbs unpacked. Includes a set of 'fresh' spindle stoppers / reel clamps. Comes with a pdf 'e' copy of Akai X-1800SD owners manual and original brochure. Can include the AKAI X-1800SD Service Manual pdf 'e' download if you wish as well. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü

We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, de-greased, and re-lubed including; Pinch Roller Pivot Arm, EOT Sensor Arm, Left Tape Tension arm mechanism, Capstan Motor (clean and re-lube), Capstan and flywheel shaft removed cleaned / re-lubed (pretty much every moving part)

ü Transport cams checked for usable condition prior to any work starting (here in the West, we have less of an issue with the typical deterioration that you see in more 'humid' climates such as the Mid-West, South and Coasts (be very careful getting an Akai from the early to mid 1970's that has spent most of it's life in a 'humid' environment).

ü Entire 8-Track transport assembly was removed and disassembled for service, including burnishing it's connector, and track selector contacts.

ü Voltage re-set to correct 120VAC

ü Circuit board edge card contacts and connectors burnished w/ solvent and fiberglass pen

ü Tape Tension arms disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed, and their springs adjusted

ü Reel table height correct

ü pinch-roller 'arm' mechanism completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Capstan / flywheel removed, bushings and axles cleaned and re-lubed and flywheels burnished

ü Capstan motor pulley burnished

ü Capstan cleaned (as well as the internal and external surfaces of the original speed sleeve)

ü ALL Internal idler tires cleaned / reconditioned

ü Rubber pinch roller removed and re-conditioned

ü New MAIN drive belt, #42-550 installed

ü Brand new counter belt, #048 installed

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport (reel and 8-Track Cartridge).

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes at ALL points thru a tape.

Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" reels.

ü Internal pots, switches (including linear record switch and 'rotary wafer' switches)and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function (initially, of course, had typical static / noise which is to be expected in an 'un-serviced' deck after 45+ years) (also a bit easier on this "Type-C" version. Just FYI).

ü External / User adjustable pots, switches and controls cleaned on the playback / record amp and tested for noise-free function

(tech notes; Line out set to 0dB using 0dB reference @ 700Hz. Vol controls @ approx 1:30)

ü Replaced VU meter lamps / bulbs #25-450

ü Cleaned 8-Track cartridge heads

ü We adjusted the VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback levels for both directions independently and record levels.

ü We adjusted the output, 'Minimum Input', 'Specified Input', 'Record Level' and 'Bias' all to spec, then further adjusted 'Bias' for Ampex GM-456

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them

ü Playback and Record Head alignment / azimuth was adjusted for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope.

ü Speed tested to 98.8% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 988Hz +/- 2Hz. {well within spec by 18Hz}).

ü Adjusted to record VERY WELL. Biased for Ampex GM 456 studio tape with the following results w/ Input at ~ 9:00 when recording, then Output control ~"2:00 PM" for playback.

ü 'Real World, DDD CD recorded sounds great w/ Ampex GM456.

ü 'Electronic' Floor noise measured at >-60dB w/ blank tape, L&R.

ü Motor had a slight amount of run-out detected at the belt pulley (side to side movement / play) which causes excessive, ambient noise, so we swapped it with another of the exact motor (we had a 'donor unit'), which was then also, completely disassembled, cleaned and lubed w/ 30W.

(tech notes; internal amp tests well w/ ~ 1mVDC across outputs w/ 8 Ohm load. Also as a side note, the Akai X-1800SD C-Type utilizes the same output transistors as the later Akai X-1810.
)

ü This AKAI X-1800SD functions, plays, and records VERY WELL (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb process / and final testing ~ 21 hours).

Cabinet covered in real TEAK wood veneer, is in decent condition with just a few 'battle scars', checking / fading to the finish (see photos above) and just had a fresh coat of Howards 'Restore a Finish' and followed Howards 'Feed-n-Wax'. All the case hardware intact and working, and had all it's fasteners torqued down. Deck looks and sounds great!

Looks great & "Ready-to-go"  AKAI X-1800SD Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Very 'famous' and popular reel tape deck. Probably half the folks stationed overseas in the military during Viet Nam that purchased a Reel to Reel came back with an 1800SD (or one of it's siblings). We've already inspected them for any detrimental issues. Ready to go now.

- DURABLE AC powered capstan motor (lasts decades longer than DC capstan motors of the 'later' models)

- Quad speeds at
7.5 ips / 19cms (with included speed sleeve adapter), 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms,1 7/8 ips / 4.8 cms & *15 ips / 38cms (requires optional 15ips kit, not available from us.

(*15 ips ONLY w/ optional speed sleeve / pinch roller kit (not typically avail.

This is only the FIRST AKAI X-1800SD we restored in ~24 years.

This machines 'Forte' would really be best suited for a 'media transfer' business, especially where you have a bench / station that doesn't have dedicated sound system (as it's go it's own, built-in amp and speakers) or for someone who has a lot of tapes to preview prior to sending for transfer, or for a library or university with a lot of tapes of different speeds / and track formats to transfer. If you're going to be listening to 'quiet, chamber' music while reading, the "AC powered" motor / fan noise could be distracting while 'casually' listening to quiet passages of music. If you tend to like the volume at more than 'low, back ground' levels, then you'll not likely notice "AC powered motor" hum (mechanical only and does not transfer into the 'signal' of the unit).

Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

ü Brand new counter belt, #042 installed

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport (reel and 8-Track Cartridge).

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes at ALL points thru a tape. It's a fine line between having the brakes actuate with too much tension, 'abruptly' stopping the tape (risking stretching / breaking of tape) or too loose (allows tape to 'dump'). (VERY difficult to do on this series). Brakes optimized for 7" reels.

ü Internal pots, switches (including linear record switch and 'rotary wafer' switches) and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function (initially, of course, had typical static / noise which is to be expected in an 'un-serviced' deck after 45+ years) (also a bit easier on this "1810 than the "A-Type and B-Type X-1800SD" version. Just FYI).

ü External / User adjustable pots, switches and controls cleaned on the playback / record amp and tested for noise-free function (tech notes; Line out set to 0dB using 0dB reference @ 400Hz. Vol controls @ approx 1:30)

ü Replaced VU meter lamps / bulbs #25-080

ü We adjusted the VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback levels for both directions independently and record levels.

ü Both spindles in good alignment.

ü Repaired broken internal connection lead wire for cap motor

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them

ü Alignment / azimuth was adjusted for peak performance on Playback and Record Heads on both the R2R and the 8-Track with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope.

ü "X-Field / Bias" head had it's clearance checked / adjusted w / feeler gauges.

ü Repaired both 'Manual' Auto-Reverse switches

ü Following initial restoration tests, we found we would have a channel drop out after playing for a while or when changing directions, and traced it to contact issues in the relays, thus the following operation...

ü Both Play and Record relays (RL0201 & RL0202) had their contacts burnished on the 'Direction Change' PCB (not an easy task. Then tested 4 Hours with multiple manual reverses)

ü Speed tested to 99.3% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1007Hz +/- 2Hz. (within spec).

ü Adjusted to record sonically well* with the following results w/ Input at ~ 9:00 when recording, then Output control re-set to ~"2:00 PM" for playback.

ü 'Real World, DDD CD recorded sounds great w/ more *quality tapes such as Maxell UD-35, TDK Audua, or Ampex GM456 rather than say Scotch 150 or Sony 150 etc.

ü 'Electronic' Floor noise measured at >-60dB w/ blank tape, L&R.

ü Depending on the impedance of any headphones utilized with the unit, the volume can be lower they would be expected thru the headphone output.

ü Motor was disassembled, had front and rear bushings cleaned and re-lubed w/ 30W. VERY quiet now.

ü This AKAI X-1810 now functions, plays, and records WELL (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb process / and final testing ~ 44 hours...DOUBLE OUCH!!!).

The AKAI X-1810 Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Ready to GO! This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. This is only about the third AKAI X-1810 we have restored in ~24 years. Great machine for playback / archiving your tapes to CD or Hard Drive or for recording new tapes. This is a clean deck. Performs very well following extensive refurbishing.
The vinyl wrapped, wood-grained case is in great 'structural' and decent cosmetic condition with only the above mentioned finish chips. The decks face, knobs, covers and all cosmetics are fabulous!
This machine would really be great for a 'media transfer' business or for someone who has a lot of tapes to preview prior to sending for transfer, or for a library or university with a lot of tapes of different speeds / and track formats to transfer. Of course it would also be great for anyone wanting to add an 'all purpose' reel to reel to their system. If your interest is primarily to 'record 8-tracks', I would simply choose a much simpler, '8-track only' deck that records better and would be less money.
Measures 17.5" wide x 18" tall x 9.8" deep and weighs 47 lbs unpacked. Comes with a pdf 'e' copy of Akai X-1810 / X-1810 owners manual and original brochure. Can include the AKAI X-1810 / X-1810 Service Manual pdf 'e' download if you wish as well. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

SHIPPING TO JOEL IN NEW JERSEY

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit for PLAYBACK*.

ü

We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Entire transport was cleaned, de-greased, and re-lubed including; Pinch Roller Pivot Arm, EOT Sensor Arm, Left Tape Tension arm mechanism, Capstan Motor (clean and re-lube), Capstan and flywheel shaft removed cleaned / re-lubed (pretty much every moving part)

ü Transport cams checked for usable condition prior to any work starting (here in the West, we have less of an issue with the typical deterioration that you see in more 'humid' climates such as the Mid-West, South and Coasts (be very careful getting an Akai from the early to mid 1970's that has spent most of it's life in a 'humid' environment).

ü Entire 8-Track transport assembly was removed and disassembled for service, including burnishing it's connector, and track elevator / selector contacts.

ü Voltage re-set to correct 120VAC

ü Circuit board edge card contacts and connectors cleaned w/ solvent and burnished w/ fiberglass pen

ü Tape Tension arms cleaned and re-lubed, and their springs adjusted

ü Bent Reel spindle disassembled completely and center axle straightened on anvil

ü Reel table height correct

ü pinch-roller 'arm' mechanism completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed

ü Capstan / flywheel removed, bushings and axles cleaned and re-lubed and flywheel burnished

ü Capstan motor pulley burnished

ü Capstan cleaned

ü Rubber pinch roller removed and re-conditioned

ü Main drive belt reconditioned

ü Brand new counter belt, #041-042 installed

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport (reel and 8-Track Cartridge).

ü Brakes adjusted on fast wind modes at ALL points thru a tape.

Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 7" reels.

ü Internal pots, switches (including linear record switch and 'rotary wafer' switches) and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function (initially, of course, had typical static / noise which is to be expected in an 'un-serviced' deck after 45+ years) (also a bit easier on this "1810D than the "A-Type and B-Type X-1800SD" version. Just FYI).

ü External / User adjustable pots, switches and controls cleaned on the playback / record amp and tested for noise-free function

ü We adjusted the VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback levels for both directions independently and record levels.

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them

ü Alignment / azimuth was adjusted for peak performance on Playback and Record Heads on both the R2R and the 8-Track with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope (** still no appreciably positive effect on recording quality).

ü "X-Field / Bias" head had it's clearance checked / adjusted w / feeler gauges. (**still no appreciably positive effect on recording quality).

ü "X-Field / Bias" head had it's impedance measured at ~2.1-2.2 Ohms, which is what others measure at. (** still no appreciably positive effect on recording quality).

ü Slightly noisy tape guide bearing re-lubed with 'heavier' lubricant to quiet operation

ü Disassembled and cleaned both 'Manual' Auto-Reverse switches

ü Following initial restoration tests, we found we would have a intermittent 'auto-reverse', and traced it to contact issues in the relays, thus the following operation...

ü Both Play and Record relays (RL0201 & RL0202) had their contacts burnished on the 'Direction Change' PCB (not an easy task. Then tested 4 Hours with multiple manual reverses)

ü Auto-Shut-Off switch cleaned for trouble-free operation (was definitely causing trouble prior to cleaning)

ü Speed tested to 99.8% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1000Hz +/- 2Hz. (VERY much within spec).

ü **Will actually record to a 'usable' level following these tips;
So you can actually make 'usable' recordings on it. You'll have to record at 7.5ips, push the levels more than you normally would into the 'Red', and Record with the EQ setting for 7.5ips. Then Playback with the 'Output' controls set much higher, and the EQ then set to 1 7/8 ips. The playback is decent, just not up to our normal standards. To get the best results, we would recommend Ampex GM-456 or similar, high quality tape. Same technique applies to the 8-Track, except EQ is not used with the 8-Track deck.

ü 'Electronic' Floor noise measured at >-52dB w/ blank tape, L&R.

ü Also following initial refurb, we thought the main cap motor was noisier than it should be, so entire deck was again, removed form housing, and stripped to allow access to Motor, which was then disassembled, had front and rear bushings cleaned and re-lubed w/ 30W. We also changed the cooling fan to a modified unit to reduce 'fan / air' noise at 7.5 ips speed. VERY quiet now.

ü Internal, built-in amp and speakers all work fine. Nothing needed for that aspect.

ü This AKAI X-1810D PLAYS VERY WELL from the reel to reel section and the 8-Track cartridge section using factory test tones, looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy.  (Total time investment in refurb process / and final testing ~ 30+ hours. OUCH!).

The AKAI X-1810D Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Ready to GO! This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great deck for 'Playback' use. As eluded to above, we were not able to get the 'recording capabilities' of either the R2R or the 8-Track Cart aspect up to standard, so again, this deck is for 'Playback' use. This one made it through after about 30+ hours of bench time.

Following mechanical / electronic refurb, entire unit was cosmetically detailed inside and out. Face is made of flat-black finished, aluminum and is dent free and in great condition (except for an additional port / hole in the lower section and a finish chip on the lower, right edge of the case). Really few issues to mention. Deck looks and plays great!

Looks great & "Ready-to-go", for PLAYBACK, AKAI X-1810D Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Very 'famous' and popular reel tape deck. Probably half the folks stationed overseas in the military during Viet Nam that purchased a Reel to Reel came back with an 1800 series. Unfortunately of course, 45 years has not been kind to Akai Reel decks (or any electro-mechanical devices that are 20 years old or older). We've already inspected them for any detrimental issues. Ready to go now.
Another note I'd like to make is that the 8-Track is among the BEST I've auditioned for playback (and we've restored and sold A LOT of 8-Track decks 'as vintage', and I sold them when NEW as well).

AKAI X-1810 Features include:

- 3 Motor transport
(means less 'Rube Goldberg' mechanisms inside like many R2R's)
- DURABLE AC powered capstan motor (lasts decades longer than DC capstan motors of the 'later' models)
- 4-Speed
* Reel to Reel, 8-Track Cartridge deck w/ built-in speakers and amp
- Up to 7" reel capacity (while you could go down as far as 3" in diameter, the torque and braking on this deck has been optimized for 7"reels)
- Built-In Amp and Speakers for listening WITHOUT a stereo / sound system if desired
- Akai's "Cross-Field" Bias Head
- One-Micron Gap Recording Head (reel)

- Stereo or MONO playback (reel tape) (means that in "MONO" mode, you can playback 4 separate passes on a tape for playback of tapes made on older decks that did 'four separate tracks')

- Quad speeds at
7.5 ips / 19cms (with included speed sleeve adapter), 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms,1 7/8 ips / 4.8 cms & *15 ips / 38cms
-
Spring loaded, Reel locks / Spindle tips (does not require rubber reel clamps / stoppers)
- Stereo playback / recording 8-Track Cartridge tape
- Auto-Reverse capable with 'sensing foil' installed (on correct side of tape)
- 'Manual-Reverse' at anytime with L & R selectors

- 'Continuous Play' or 'End of Tape Stop' for 8-Track
- S.R.T. Super Range Tape Equalization setting
- Auto-Off for Reel deck
- Dual Analog VU meters

- 8-Track 'Track Selector' w/ typical indicator lights
- Dual front mounted 1/4" Microphone inputs
- Front mounted 1/4" Headphone jack
- RCA and DIN I/O's
- Separate L&R Input / Volume controls
- CUE monitoring in 'fast wind' mode at a moderate volume

- NOT an OFFICIAL feature, BUT one function this deck will allow is a sort of CUE by slightly pushing up on the 'pause' lever, while the deck is in play, you can get a 'variable speed' CUE function. You'll either need to very gradually release the pressure or with your other hand move the 'Play' lever to 'Stop' when you reach the spot you wanted to 'cue to' or the tape will track off the front edge of the pinch roller. Takes a bit of practice to get it right.

- ANOTHER 'UN-OFFICIAL' feature of this deck is that due to it's internal 'brake' design, it's possible to 'SCRATCH' the tape across the playback head forward or backward! Just like with a DJ turntable!

- Separate L&R Tone controls

-True "WORLD AC POWER"™ allows unit to be operated on 50 or 60 Hz AC and will select voltages from 110v, 120v, 220v and 240 volts AC input (currently set for proper power for North America).

This is only the third AKAI X-1810 we have restored in ~24 years. Great machine for playback / archiving your tapes to CD or Hard Drive. This is a beautiful deck. Performs incredibly well following extensive refurbishing for PLAYBACK.
The vinyl wrapped, wood-grained case is in great 'structural' and cosmetic condition with only a few issues worth mentioning. One, there's a Formica / finish chip on the lower, right edge of the case. Two, someone added an access port to the front panel, near the 'selector' switches for?. Three, there's a bit of surface corrosion on the rear, lower edge of the black, metal panel. There's also a bit of aluminum corrosion on the lower, front trim piece. Along the sides of the wood housing, are 2 holes from being 'rack mounted' in the past (see photos above). Overall the decks face, knobs, covers and all cosmetics are in good condition.

Measures 17.5" wide x 18" tall x 9.8" deep and weighs 47 lbs unpacked. Comes with a pdf 'e' copy of Akai X-1810 owners manual and original brochure. Can include the AKAI X-1810 Service Manual pdf 'e' download if you wish as well. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately depending on stock levels.)

ü Following initial restoration tests, we found we would have a channel drop out after playing for a while or when changing directions, and traced it to contact issues in the relays, thus the following operation...

ü Both Play and Record relays (RL0201 & RL0202) had their contacts burnished on the 'Direction Change' PCB (not an easy task. Then tested 4 Hours with multiple manual reverses)

ü Speed tested to 98.0% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 980Hz +/- 2Hz. (within spec).

ü Adjusted to record sonically well* with the following results w/ Input at ~ 9:00 when recording, then Output control re-set to ~"2:00 PM" for playback.

ü 'Real World, DDD CD recorded sounds great w/ more *quality tapes such as Maxell UD-35, TDK Audua, or Ampex GM456 rather than say Scotch 150 or Sony 150 etc.

ü 'Electronic' Floor noise measured at >-52dB w/ blank tape, L&R.

ü Depending on the impedance of any headphones utilized with the unit, the volume can be lower they would be expected thru the headphone output.

ü Motor was disassembled, had front and rear bushings cleaned and re-lubed w/ 30W. VERY quiet now.

ü This AKAI X-1810D functions, plays, and records VERY WELL (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb process / and final testing ~ 26 hours).

The AKAI X-1810D Stereo Reel to Reel tape deck. Ready to GO! This is one of the few reel to reel decks we get in that make it to our finished page. Great performer. If you're looking for a reel to reel deck to "actually use" here you go. Only about 25% of the used Reel decks out there can be "practically" restored to working order. This one made it through with flying colors after about 26 hours of bench time.

This is only the second AKAI X-1810 we have restored in ~24 years. Great machine for playback / archiving your tapes to CD or Hard Drive or for recording new tapes. This is a beautiful deck. Performs incredibly well following extensive refurbishing.
The vinyl wrapped, wood-grained case is in great 'structural' and cosmetic condition.
Comes with a pdf 'e' copy of Akai X-1810 / X-1810D owners manual and original brochure. Can include the AKAI X-1810 / X-1810D Service Manual pdf 'e' download if you wish as well. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately depending on stock levels.)

We will be getting more machines ready over the next few days to a couple weeks, but it is a slow process, as every 20+ year old Reel to Reel tape deck requires 10-18 hours of service to be brought back to "usable" condition. Check back often as they will sell out quickly!
