ü  Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit. Both Main Drive belt and Counter belt have been reconditioned for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip. Importantly entire internal transport disassembled, cleaned of old grease & re-lubed. We also burnished the capstan, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Always at issue on these machines is the Pinch Roller swing arm assembly that has been completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed. Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, and adjusted on fast wind modes also. Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 'loaded' 7" tapes. Motor has been re-lubed as well. All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function. Both spindles in perfect alignment. Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance. Plays perfectly and records great. Speed checked to 100% accuracy  (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1000Hz). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!! (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 16 hours). This unit was very clean and well cared for when we started on it. Cosmetically in near new condition!

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü Importantly ENTIRE internal transport COMPLETELY disassembled, cleaned of old grease & re-lubed.

ü Both Main Drive belt and Counter belt have been reconditioned for trouble-free service.

ü Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip.

ü We also burnished the capstan

ü heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Always at issue on these machines is the Pinch Roller swing arm assembly that has been completely disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

ü Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, and adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü Following above adjustments, Reel Start and Stop tested at beginning, middle and end of 'loaded' 7" tapes.

ü Motor has been re-lubed as well.

ü All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü Following initial refurb, we found tracks 1-4 to be diminished in high frequency response relative to tracks 2-3. We decided it could only be attributed to excessive wear to the Play / Rec head. After inspecting a number of replacement heads, we found one from a TC-200 (same head part number, and is the same head used in most of the Sony decks from that period) and installed it. Following that, we were able to bring the top end of 1-4 to within about 4dB of 2-3

ü Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance.

ü "Playback is now strong (following 'head-ectomy' with good 'top end' response.

ü Heads now in good shape as well, with plenty of performance left in them.

ü Plays perfectly on all tracks.

ü Speed checked to 99.4% accuracy  (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 994Hz).

(Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 24 hours {yes, WAY TOO many hours on about any deck, but that's how it goes sometimes}). This unit was very clean and well cared for when we started on it.

Cosmetically in very clean condition!

 ____________________________

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning, lubing, adjusting, demagnetizing and testing everything. Plays well (very strong with great 'top end brilliance'), but as stated above, the recording on "1-4" is fairly diminished in signal.
Deck is designed to be used only lying on it's back (horizontally).  Measures 14" deep x 15" wide x 6" tall and weighs 21 lbs unpacked. Comes with original Sony lid. Includes e-copy / pdf download of the Sony TC-105 Owners / Users Manual, and the Sony TC-105 service manual if purchaser desires. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

ü  Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü  We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü  Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned of "varnished" lubes and re-lubed as well as the always at issue, Pinch Roller plunge assembly, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü  Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned

ü  All three internal drive tires / wheels burnished / conditioned for positive grip

ü  Capstan burnished.

ü  Both counter belts replaced for trouble-free service.

ü  Both reel hubs / clutches removed, disassembled and re-lubed.

ü Auto-Stop mechanism disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed, and their springs adjusted and had fresh 500,000 grade silicone lube gel applied

ü  All hub brake pads have been replaced, and their bearings re-lubed and adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü  Motor has been re-lubed as well.

ü  Internal voltage is self regulated DC and values were verified.

ü  All Internal & External pots, controls, & switches (including the linear 'record' switches) cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü  Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü  We also adjusted the reel table heights for no "reel rub".

ü  Pinch roller reconditioned / re-surfaced.

ü  New VU meter illumination lamp installed and both record indicator lamps test fine.

ü  Internal 'Bias', 'Record-Level' and 'PB' micro-pots cleaned EXTENSIVELY and levels adjusted.

ü  Heads were cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Heads in great shape as well, with many years of performance left in them

ü  Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope and exhibited good wave form out to 15kHz!

ü  Both level meters adjusted for even playback level w/ factory test tone tape.

ü We adjusted the VU meters mechanically and electronically w/ factory test tone tapes, as well as the internal playback levels for both directions independently and record levels.

ü Speed tested to 98.8% accuracy following refurb (meaning that our 'verified' 1000Hz test tape now plays back at 1012Hz).

ü Adjusted to record @ a fairly respectable -6dB @ 1kHz on normal bias tape

ü Floor noise measured at >-60dB w/ blank tape, L&R

ü AC Line cord replaced

ü This SONY TC-250A functions, plays VERY well and records decently (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 12.5 hours).

(photo collage showing a 'taste' of the process involved in the 'initial' stages of refurbishing these decks)

The analog, meter needles can be a bit 'sticky' on this one, but it it's lower price range, coupled with the odds that most folks are looking at this deck primarily for playback, we deduced it would not be worth the added resources, thus 'final, additional cost to the price tag' to source replacements. They work most of the time, but sometimes 'stick' in place
. Other than that, the deck looks and works great!

We have completely gone through the mechanicals of this unit. Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled. Flywheel was removed, cleaned and reinstalled. The capstan was burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport. Again, the entire transport assembly was painstakingly disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed as well as the always at issue, 'Pinch Roller swing arm' assembly. 'Auto-Stop' mechanism disassembled and re-lubed with fresh 500,000 silicon damping fluid. Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, and adjusted on fast wind modes also. Motor was re-lubed. Voltage set for correct North American AC current at 117VAC with correct 60Hz motor spindle pulley and 0° timing. All internal pots and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function. Both spindles were completely disassembled, cleaned and had their bearings / bushings cleaned and re-lubed and are in perfect alignment. Main Drive and counter belts replaced for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller was removed, cleaned & reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip. We also adjusted the reel table heights. Heads in great shape as well, with VERY little wear and many hundreds of hours of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL 1k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k & 15k tones thru an oscilloscope. Plays fine and Records GREAT at +/- 0dB (1kHz @ .775V)! Internal PB output level and VU playback meter level micro-potentiometers adjusted for even (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Again, following the above stated bench work / testing, our technician has 'Certified' this deck and it is an great performer sonically and mechanically. This deck has had our full refurbishment. It's pretty much had the clock rolled back 40 years on it. With the exception of 'light' scuffing at the top edge of the trim, and the 'black' is worn from the front of the transport lever (see photos above), the units looks fabulous. Machine is READY TO GO! Would make a great deck for any one needing a deck to do tape to CD or Hard Drive transfers of reel to reel tapes or for making NEW reel tape recordings. Of course GREAT for playing your QUADRAPHONIC / SURROUND SOUND tapes as well. Comes with an 'e' copy / pdf of the Sony TC-366-4 (a previous version that would be applicable) owners / users manual. Includes a take-up reel. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty. Measures 15.75" wide x 7.75" deep x 15.25" tall and weighs 24 lbs unpacked. (Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately if you need them. We do ship our decks with a plastic take-up reel, a tape to 'practice record' on and a 'pre-recorded' tape for playback.)

Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, new brake pads installed and adjusted on fast wind modes also. Heads in great shape as well, with many hundreds of hours of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL 1k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k & 15k tones thru an oscilloscope. Plays fine and Records GREAT at +/- 0dB! Both PB output levels and VU meters playback internally adjusted for even (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition. Speed checked to 98.6% accuracy. Following electro/mechanical restoration, unit received a cosmetic cleaning / detailing. Only cosmetic issue is the case has a few minor 'battle scars' / edge dings.
(Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 12+ hours). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!! Cosmetically in near new condition!

Of the many Reel to Reel Tape decks built by Sony, especially from the late 1960’s and into the early 70’s, this has always been one of our favorite machines for Features, Build quality (that by luck, lends itself well to restoration 50 years later), solid and most importantly DEPENDABLE performance, and consistent sound quality.

ü Our technician has EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part including head block assembly, was cleaned of "varnished" lubes and re-lubed as well as the always at issue on most Sony's of this era, Pinch Roller plunge assembly, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü All Drive and counter belts replaced for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, as well as all three internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip, capstan burnished.

ü Supply (left) reel spindle lock replaced from another unit we purchased for that and a couple other parts as the original had a small, almost invisible crack in it.

ü Both reel hubs / clutches removed, disassembled and cleaned.

ü All hub brake pads have been replaced, and their bearings re-lubed and adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü Motor has been re-lubed as well.

ü Motor 'cooling fan' repositioned for quieter operation

ü Internal voltage is self regulated DC and values were verified.

ü All Internal & External pots, controls, & switches (including the linear 'record' switches) cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment (originally were not, and were off a few degrees from perpendicular).

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights for tighter fitting reels, and no 'flange rub' by adding a layer of rubber under the original table mats

ü Pinch roller reconditioned / re-surfaced.

ü Mains AC cord replaced

ü Power supply board tested to it's intended +25VDC. We had full voltage to the record amplifier and was able to adjust record amp to intended levels.

ü New VU meter illumination lamp installed (#25-090) and both record indicator lamps test fine.

ü Internal 'Line Level', 'Bias', 'Record-Level', 'Record EQ' and 'PB' micro-pots cleaned EXTENSIVELY and levels adjusted with proper test tapes.

ü Heads were cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Ferrite and Ferrite heads all in great shape, with many years of performance left in them. (technicians note: "heads appear 'un-used'. They're the best we've ever had on a deck and look NEW!")

ü Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope at 100Hz, 1kHz and 10kHz.

ü Both level meters adjusted for even playback level w/ factory test tone tape.

ü Floor noise tested to -60Dbm w/ fresh, blank tape on PB.

ü  Plays and Records GREAT both channels

ü  Records GREAT @ 0dB / 1kHz on High Bias tape (Maxell UDXL) w/ L=~+1dB and R=~+2dB, however, there is an issue with, random 'low volume' 'artifacts' that appear on one channel during recording. We noticed it when recording 'zero' signal on blank tape, but it's there. I'm the only one here who noticed it, but during very quiet passages, you might notice it when recording.

ü Speed checked once 'warmed up', to 98..91% accuracy. (Meaning a 'factory' 1kHz tape plays back at 1011Hz. (tech note: has Sony 60Hz / #0 motor pulley installed from factory)

ü Internal cabinet braces re-worked / re-glued.

ü Following the above procedures, entire unit was detailed inside and out

Again, Pinch roller and Heads all in GREAT condition.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing
~ 21 hours).
Cosmetically in fabulous condition!

Of the many Reel to Reel Tape decks built by Sony, especially from the late 1960’s and into the early 70’s, this has always been one of our favorite machines for Features, Build quality (that by luck, lends itself well to restoration 50 years later), solid and most importantly DEPENDABLE performance, and consistent sound quality.

ü Our technician has EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part including head block assembly, was cleaned of "varnished" lubes and re-lubed as well as the always at issue on most Sony's of this era, Pinch Roller plunge assembly, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü Flywheel / capstan removed, bushings cleaned and re-lubed when re-assembled.

ü Capstan cleaned / burnished

ü All Drive and counter belts replaced for trouble-free service.

ü All three internal drive tires / wheels resurfaced on drill-press, then reconditioned for positive grip

ü We discovered that one of the idler wheels had a bronze bushing that with enough wear that caused excessive mechanical noise. We replaced it with an original / OEM wheel from another TC-377 we had and re-conditioned it. Now the entire deck is quite as it should be.

ü Both reel hubs / clutches removed, disassembled and cleaned.

ü All hub brake pads have been replaced, and their bearings re-lubed and adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü Motor has been re-lubed as well.

ü Internal voltage is self regulated DC and values were verified.

ü All Internal & External pots, controls, & switches (including the linear 'record' switches) cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both reel tables removed, disassembled, clutch pads resurfaced, then reassembled and tensioned correctly

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights for tighter fitting reels, and no 'flange rub' by adding a layer of rubber under the original table mats (assuming you're installing reels that are also 'running true')

ü Pinch roller reconditioned / re-surfaced.

ü Mains AC cord replaced

ü Power supply board tested to it's intended +25VDC.

They're the best we've ever had on a deck and look NEW!")

ü Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance with factory test tone tape and oscilloscope at 100Hz, 1kHz and 10kHz.

ü Both level meters adjusted for even playback level w/ factory test tone tape.

ü Floor noise tested to -60dBm w/ fresh, blank tape on PB.

ü Plays and Records GREAT both channels

ü Records GREAT @ 0dB / 1kHz on High Bias tape (Ampex GM456 and / or ATR Tape) w/ L=~+2dB and R=~+2dB. Recorded program material SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!!

ü Speed checked once 'warmed up', to 99.1% accuracy. (Meaning a 'factory' 1kHz tape plays back at 991Hz. (tech note: has Sony 60Hz / #0 motor pulley installed from factory)

ü Following the above procedures, entire unit was detailed inside and out

Again, Pinch roller and F&F Heads all in GREAT condition.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing
~ 17.5 hours).

Cosmetically there's a few striations in the upper, left corner of the face, the lower, left corner and circular 'witness marks' from metal reels being 'stopped by hand' at some point in it's life. There's also a small ding in the lower, left corner of the face (see photos above of details).

Original issues were typical of most 40 year old reel to reel decks plus an unusual one; Interestingly, the internal transport was one of the cleanest we've ever seen initially, still had sluggish start, iffy brakes, noisy / dirty switches and controls etc. Main, critical issue was no recording from one side. As listed below we tracked it to an 'open' Record head. Upon sourcing a replacement head, we discovered diminishing level of signal above 1kHz. Upon further inspection, we discovered a very tiny crack in the replacement record head that was only visible with a jewelers loop. We then source a third head which performs fine.

Of the many Reel to Reel Tape decks built by Sony, especially from the late 1960’s and into the early 70’s, this has always been one of our favorite machines for Features, Build quality (that by luck, lends itself well to restoration 50 years later), solid and most importantly DEPENDABLE performance, and consistent sound quality.

ü Internal 'Line Level', 'Bias', 'Record-Level', 'Record EQ' and 'PB' micro-pots cleaned EXTENSIVELY and levels adjusted with proper test tapes.

ü Heads were cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Ferrite and Ferrite heads all in great shape, with many years of performance left in them. (technicians note: "heads appear 'un-used'. They're the best we've ever had on a deck and look NEW!")

ü Plays and Records GREAT both channels

Following the above work and calibration, Recording tests performed @ 7.5ips and most at 0dB in the 'Source' position unless otherwise noted.
Here’s the results:

Memorex 1.0mil @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +3dB L & +1dB R
Recorded program from "ddd" source was the 'brightest' on the Memorex.

GM 456 on 'Normal' position @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +1.5dB L & +0.5dB R
GM 456 on 'Special' position @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +0dB L & -1.5dB R
GM 456 on 'Normal' position @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = +3.0dB L & +2.0dB R
GM 456 on 'Special' position @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = +3.0dB L & +1.0dB R
Recorded program from "ddd" source was actually not as bright as it was on the Memorex.

MAXELL UDXL on 'Normal' position @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +3.0dB L & +2.5dB R
MAXELL UDXL on 'Special' position @ 7.5ips. 1kHz @ 0dB = +2.5dB L & +1.5dB R
MAXELL UDXL on 'Normal' position @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = +3.0dB L & +2.0dB R
MAXELL UDXL on 'Special' position @ 7.5ips. White Noise @ 0dB = +2.5dB L & +1.0dB R
Recorded program from "ddd" source was actually almost as bright as it was on the Memorex and better than the GM456.
We also tried Scotch 203 and Recorded program from "ddd" source was also better than the GM456.

Recorded program material overall SOUNDS GREAT!!!

ü Speed checked once 'warmed up', to 100% accuracy. (Meaning a 'factory' 1kHz tape plays back at 1000Hz ±1Hz. (tech note: this one has Sony 60Hz / #0 motor pulley installed from factory)

ü Following the above procedures, entire unit was detailed inside and out

Again, Pinch roller and F&F Heads all in GREAT condition.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing
~ 19 hours).

Cosmetically the main issues are small, white, spots of paint that seems to be impervious to any of our normal, shop solvents / cleaners. One of the head mount sheet metal has surface corrosion (does not affect performance and not the actual head. Also, the upper face panel has circular striations from fairly common 'reel rub' from metal reels being 'stopped' by hand and pushed into the fact. There's a few scratches near the pinch roller. There's also a couple veneer chips to the case, and a couple 'white' marks on the face near the meters. Nothing really offensive, but noticeable. (see photos above of details).

ü All Drive and counter belts replaced for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller has been reconditioned, as well as all three internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip, capstan burnished.

ü Supply (left) reel spindle lock replaced from another unit we purchased for that and a couple other parts as the original had a small, almost invisible crack in it.

ü Both reel hubs / clutches removed, disassembled and cleaned.

ü All hub brake pads have been replaced, and their bearings re-lubed and adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü Motor has been re-lubed as well.

ü Internal voltage is self regulated DC and values were verified.

ü All Internal & External pots, controls, & switches (including the linear 'record' switches) cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment (originally were not, and were off a few degrees from perpendicular).

ü We also adjusted the reel table heights for no "reel rub".

ü Pinch roller reconditioned / re-surfaced.

ü Initial 'less than stellar' recording performance on one side was traced down to a bad, 19V Zener diode on the power supply board, causing it to supply ~5V instead of it's intended +25VDC. Once replaced, we had full voltage to the record amplifier and was then able to adjust record amp to intended levels.

ü New VU meter illumination lamp installed and both record indicator lamps test fine.

ü Internal 'Bias', 'Record-Level', 'Record EQ' and 'PB' micro-pots cleaned EXTENSIVELY and levels adjusted with proper test tapes.

ü Heads were cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Ferrite and Ferrite heads all in great shape, with many years of performance left in them. (technicians note: "heads appear 'un-used'. They're the best we've ever had on a deck and look NEW!")

ü Floor noise tested to -60Dbm w/ fresh, blank tape on PB.

ü Entire face plate replaced with a cleaner example from a donor unit as well as the originally scratched / scuffed head cover

Plays and Records GREAT @ 0dB / 1kHz on High Bias tape (Maxell UDXL).

ü Speed checked once 'warmed up', to 98.23% accuracy. (Meaning a 'factory' 1kHz tape plays back at 1018Hz. The last on of these we had in 2014 tested to just over 95% accuracy, which is just at the limit of passing our bar) (tech note: has Sony #0 motor / belt pulley installed from factory)

ü Following the above procedures, entire unit was detailed inside and out

Again, Pinch roller and Heads all in GREAT condition.

(Total time investment in refurb / testing
~ 21 hours).
Cosmetically in fabulous condition!

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

Original tech notes on 'pre-inspection';
"Dirty, but relatively unmarked...take-up bushing loose in chassis...AC power cord frayed....Voltage incorrectly set to 110V...Playback head VERY worn...main drive tire dried & cracked and will need to be replaced...dents in pinch roller...FF & REW partially function. Entire transport needs total overhaul...motor is quiet...main drive belt stretched / cracked...Right channel very low output...speed; unable to determine as entire transport doesn't function well enough...VERY noisy controls...leaf switches intermittent to non-functional...Rec pressure pad too flat...very little high frequency likely due to excessive head wear."

ü We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and mechanical parts cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü Flywheels removed, cleaned and reinstalled.

ü Capstans burnished

ü Again, the entire transport assembly was painstakingly disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed.

ü 'Auto-Stop' mechanism disassembled and re-lubed with fresh 300,000 silicon damping fluid.

ü Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, and adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü Main AC / Line / Power switch replaced with Original Sony from a donor unit

ü Burnished leaf switches

ü VU meter illumination lamps / bulbs check fine.

ü Both spindles were completely disassembled, cleaned and had their bearings / bushings cleaned and re-lubed and are in perfect alignment and run 'true' (see above photos).

ü Heights adjusted on both reel tables.

ü Replaced dried / cracked idler tire with 'reconditioned' unit

ü Main Drive and counter belts replaced for trouble-free service.

ü Rubber pinch roller removed, cleaned & reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip.

ü Combination Record / Playback head replaced with sourced OEM unit in good shape

ü Tape heads and entire transport cleaned and demagnetized.

ü Heads in great shape as well, and should have many hundreds of hours of performance left in them.

ü All Amplifier controls and input selectors cleaned extensively

ü AUX, Tuner and Phono inputs all tested fine on both channels following 'control cleaning'

ü Amplifier tested on both channels (not a 'power house' of volume, but fine for 'lower volume' needs. Will get as loud as you need it to once connected to your system).

ü Both speakers tested and frequency swept with no issues (internal and external, but again, won't get 'room filling' loud as they're simply to monitor playback).

ü Speaker wires, amp input jacks and plugs all in perfect condition

ü Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL 1k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k & 15k tones with oscilloscope.

ü Records well, but much lower on VU than input (about -12-15 dB). Sonically fine. Biased for *Ampex GM 456 studio tape with the following results:
1kHz recorded @ 0dB resulted in PB @ -15dB (with minimal 'artifacts')

'Real World', DDD CD recorded at 0 = -12dB but sounded fine. This deck is a much better 'playback' unit than a 'record' unit.

* We also had great results with Maxell UD XL (Gold Box) tape as well
Note: If you're going to be making 'new' recordings, you'll want to 'push' the levels well into the "red" to get a good PB level.

ü Floor noise measured at -60dBm w/ blank tape, L&R

ü Both PB output levels and VU meters playback internally adjusted for even response.

ü We really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy).

ü Tape Speed tested to 100% accuracy on each speed independently, via cir bd micro-pots, utilizing 'factory' test tapes meaning that 1000 Hz tape plays back at 1000Hz +/-1Hz!

ü External Cabinet and some of the speaker hardware replaced with Original Sony from a donor unit

ü Following electro/mechanical restoration, unit received a cosmetic cleaning / detailing.

ü (Total time investment in refurb / testing 29 hours).
Deck is now in overall, GREAT condition!!!

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Original SONY TC-560D Specifications as follows:

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

As stated earlier we have completely gone through it cleaning, re-lubing, adjusting, demagnetizing and testing everything. All rubber parts inspected, replaced and / or reconditioned. Records at approx -12-15dB and Plays well (and we really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed CD material and CD test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy
(speed is correct to 100% @ 1kHz) and making test recordings. All fast wind and stop functions work perfectly at any point in the tape. Only two minor cosmetic issues; AC cord storage compartment door missing and head cover securing screws missing. Head cover still stays on well with friction. Pinch roller reconditioned and heads all in GREAT condition!!! Face and knobs all in great cosmetic condition as is the original case, hinges and latches. Both speakers detach from the top and form the top of the case when latched. Speaker cables store in lids. Since this unit has a built-in amplifier, pre-amp controls, multiple inputs and built-in speakers, it can be used as a true "stand-alone" unit. The internal amplifier and built-in speakers actually sound great as well! Very surprising. Of course unit will still patch into any stereo / sound system normally. Measures 15" tall x 20" wide x  x 10" deep (with speaker / covers installed) and weighs 40 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty. Also includes a pair of rubber hub stoppers! (Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are usually available separately if you need them)

GREAT performing Sony TC-570 'SELF POWERED / SELF-CONTAINED', 1/4", Open Reel stereo tape deck with 3-Heads and 3-Speeds! This is only the second or third "Self Powered, WITH Speakers' Reel to Reel we've decided to restore / refurbish in 23 years of having the website.
The deck, by design, has slightly elevated mechanical noise from it's transport. Does not transfer thru the audio. At normal listening levels you wouldn't likely notice it, but at lowest volume levels with 'quieter' music, it's audible.
Occasionally (about 1-2 out of 10 times) the pinch roller doesn't 'trap' the tape between the capstan and pinch roller (it actually hasn't done this any of the last dozen times I auditioned the deck, but it had happened a couple times and is nothing for us to address).

Overall, a great deck for all-around Playback and recording of reels up to 7" in diameter, and with it's own 'built-in' amplifier and speakers, makes the deck even more versatile and fun!

Sony TC-570, POWERED / SELF CONTAINED Reel to Reel Tape Recorder Features include:

- 3-Heads for instant monitoring of tape levels / record quality while recording. (also handy for us here at the shop to really dial in it's recording performance)
- Triple speeds at 7.5 ips / 19cms, 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms & 1 7/8 ips / 4.75 cms
- DURABLE AC powered capstan motor (lasts decades longer than DC capstan motors of the 'later' models)

- Self Powered (Built-in Amplifier)
- Built-in, Detachable Speakers (can be controlled separately from the 'Line Output' to your stereo system. Also, their level can be controlled separately from the 'Record' levels)
- Modern, Spring loaded, reel spindle locks (no need for rubber stoppers to hold reels in place)

- Input selector for AUX, Tuner, Microphones and Phonograph
- Separate Bass and Treble when monitoring thru built-in amp and speakers
- Stereo / Mono Mode Selector for built-in amplifier
-
1/4", 4-Track / 2-Channel Stereo or 4-Channel Mono capable Tape Head format
-
3" / 5" / 7" Reel Capacity (
*braking and starting torque optimized for 7" reels)
4-Track / 2-Channel tape format, although other track formats may likely work sufficiently as well)
- Triple speeds at 7.5 ips / 19cms, 3 3/4ips / 9.5 cms & 1 7/8 ips / 4.9 cms
- Sound-On-Sound w/ level control (allows pseudo 'Mult-Tracking' with some practice. We have a TEAC A-1200 / 1500 Manual covers this extensively and necessarily)
- Echo w/ level control (We have a TEAC A-1200 / 1500 Manual covers this extensively and necessarily)

- Separate L & R Line Input / Microphone Input level controls
-
Auto-Stop
- Tape Type selector for "Normal" or "Special" (higher bias)
- Dual analog VU meters for monitoring Playback and Record levels
- Dual front mounted 1/8" mic input jacks
- 1/4" Stereo Headphone jack
- Mechanical Tape counter
- RCA inputs and outputs as well as DIN
-
Grounded, EIC, detachable AC cord
- True "WORLD AC POWER"   allows unit to be operated on 50 or 60 Hz AC and will select voltages from 110v, 120v, 220v and 240 volts AC input. (50Hz / 60Hz is selectable but "50Hz / Euro-Asia" power would require capstan pulley.)
- 8-Pin port for optional TEAC RC-101 wired remote control (remote not included or available anymore from us)

Again, following the above stated bench work / testing, our technician has 'Certified' this deck and it is an great performer sonically and mechanically. This deck has had EXTENSIVE restoration with the above mentioned 26+ hours of tech time. Restored, extensively tested / played, then re-benched after 'burn-in' to double check performance / adjustments.
As stated earlier, this is only the second or third 'Self-Powered' reel to reel tape deck we've restored / refurbished since starting the website some 24 years ago. The amp and speakers actually sound great, and are completely usable. Of course the unit can also be used as a standard 'component' deck, meaning you can still connect it to a receiver / amplifier / or computer for media transfers. AND, since it has multiple inputs, it is essentially also the heart of a 'complete stereo system'.
Cosmetic issues are minimal. There's a 'reel mark' on the left face, some wear to the 'transport function' silk-screening, and evidence of a repaired grill dent (see photos above).
Looks good & Ready to go! Comes with a take-up reel. Again, GREAT for bur
ning your tapes to CD or Hard Drive or for a 'media transfer business'. Also handy for archiving / researching / revisiting your tapes prior to 'digitizing' them.

ü  Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü  We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit.

ü  Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled.

ü  'Tweaked' Mic / Line pot shafts straightened.

ü  Line / Mic potentiometers had '2-stage' cleaning, meaning that they were cleaned, left overnight, then re-cleaned.

ü  'Direction Change Stopper' wheel, resurfaced / rebuilt for correct tension arm operation.

ü  Flywheel was removed, cleaned and reinstalled. During this the 'capstan bearing' was re-aligned, and the test for this was that it should 'free-wheel' 31 sec when aligned, which it does now.

ü  The capstan was burnished, heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü  Again, the entire transport assembly was painstakingly disassembled, cleaned and re-lubed as well as the always at issue on this series of decks, 'Pinch Roller swing arm' assembly.

ü  'Auto-Stop' mechanism disassembled and re-lubed with fresh 300,000 silicon damping fluid.

ü  Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, new brake pads installed and adjusted on fast wind modes also.

ü  Rewind 'back tension' adjusted.

ü  Reel Motor 'start / run' capacitors checked.

ü  All three motors were re-lubed.

ü  All internal pots / controls cleaned in both the playback amplifier, record amplifiers and tested for noise-free function.

ü  VU meter illumination lamps / bulbs all working fine and run 'cool' so should last years more.

ü  Both spindles were completely disassembled, cleaned and had their bearings / bushings cleaned and re-lubed and are in perfect alignment.

ü  Spindle tips checked and 'tweaked' where necessary to ensure 'trueness' when in 'fast wind' (check photos)

ü  Heights adjusted on both reel tables.

ü  Both counter belts replaced for trouble-free service.

ü  A pre-existing issue with the FF not staying engaged was repaired at it's switch

ü  New reel hub brake pads fabricated, installed and adjusted

ü  Rubber pinch roller was removed, cleaned & reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip. Pinch roller was re-reconditioned following initial testing.

ü  Head-block assembly completely disassembled, cleaned and moving parts correctly re-lubed.

ü  Tape heads and entire transports demagnetized.

ü  Heads in great shape as well, with many hundreds of hours of performance left in them. (Tech noted they have VERY MINIMAL wear)

ü  We adjusted the VU meters mechanically for correct 'resting position' and electronically utilizing "STL" test / alignment tapes, as well as the internal playback and record levels.

ü  Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL 1k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k & 15k tones thru an oscilloscope.

ü  We adjusted the output, 'Minimum Input', 'Specified Input', 'Record Level' and 'Bias' all to spec, then further adjusted 'Bias' for Ampex GM-456 (meaning all meter, playback levels and 'internal' recording levels adjusted with 'real' alignment / test tapes for optimum performance, essentially 'rolling back the clock 40 years)

ü  Adjusted to Play and Record AMAZINGLY WELL with the following results on Ampex GM-456 tape (and a well used tape at that!!!) with the following results:
1kHz in forward direction recorded
@ 0dB resulted in PB @ +0.5dB
1kHz in reverse direction recorded
@ 0dB resulted in PB @ -0.75dB
White Noise in forward direction recorded
@ 0dB resulted in PB @ +1dB
White Noise in reverse direction recorded
@ 0dB resulted in PB @ -0.5dB

'Real World, DDD CD recorded in such a way that it was virtually indistinguishable from the original CD DDD 'Master Recording'.

ü  We really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded /
factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition.

ü  All three internal speed pots adjusted to 100% accuracy on each speed independently, via cir bd micro-pots, utilizing 'Institute of High Fidelity' test tape meaning that 1Khz tape plays back at 1000Hz +/-1Hz! (many reel to reel decks do not feature a 'DC power' capstan motor, which is why we were able to adjust it's speed. Many have AC Synchronous motors which are not adjustable so getting the speed close to correct is often a 'crap shoot')

ü  Following electro/mechanical restoration, unit received a cosmetic
cleaning / detailing. Unit has a couple of minor issues. Missing ‘rear’ feet replaced with OEM / Sony Originals. About the only cosmetic issues remaining are: the ‘tip’ of the ‘Amp’ On/Off toggle switch is snapped off, so they’re short (still functions, just doesn't stick out as far as normal). The others are cosmetic in that there are a few 'minor battle scars' cosmetically with a few chips in the Formica finish on the casing and a few scuffs / scratches on the head cover / fascia.

ü  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 17+ hours).
Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

BUT MOST OF ALL, RE-READ THE RECORDING LEVELS, LISTED ABOVE THAT WE GOT FROM THIS
DECK FOLLOWING IT'S EXTENSIVE SERVICE.

Sony TC-580 Reel to Reel Tape Recorder Features include:

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Original SONY TC-580 Specifications as follows:

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Again, following the above stated bench work / testing, our technician has 'Certified' this deck and it is an great performer sonically and mechanically. This deck has had EXTENSIVE restoration with the above mentioned 17+ hours of tech time. It's pretty much had the clock rolled back 40 years on it. Restored, extensively tested / played, then re-benched after 'burn-in' to double and triple check performance / adjustments.
Just an operational note about this and many other Sony reel to reel decks. I find them easiest to use with their head cover removed when it comes to loading and un-loading tapes (although some actually rely on the head cover to guide the tape thru loading properly).

I have to say at this point, after about 2 and a half decades of restoring and selling Reel to Reel decks on line,
that I challenge anyone to find another group that is doing a better, or even as thorough of a job of restoring decks (or anything for that matter) as we do!!!!!!

Looks great & Ready to go! Best for playback and works decently for recording. Comes with a take-up reel.

Can include a pdf 'e' copy of the Sony TC-730 (same deck but with built-in amp and speakers) Owners manual (very poor copy) and a copy of the Sony TC-580 service manual if the purchaser wishes. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty. Measures 17.5" wide x 9" deep x 18.25" tall and weighs 43 lbs unpacked.
(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately depending on stock levels.)

We've been 'sitting' on this deck along with a few other 'difficult / performance critical' decks for a few years now, waiting until we had a technician with sufficient skills to 'do them justice' and realize their top potential performance. Sure we have been able to do more 'bread-n-butter' decks for years, such as Akai 150 / 210 / 1700 / 1800 / 4000 series, Sony TC-100, 300 & 300 series, Teac A-4010 / 6010 series, Pioneer RT-707's and 909's (yes, great looking and darn good performing decks, but I hate to 'burst your bubble', but while they have proven to be a 'durable' design 30 years after they were discontinued, they're no where near the best performing decks as R2R's go, sorry) and others, but chose not to 'tackle' these. Well, now by a stroke of luck, we have 'him'. Our 'new to us' technician is able to really 'do justice' to decks such as this. Yes, he's expensive and it's time consuming, but AS ALWAYS, we are striving for TOP quality and not for 'cheap'. If you want 'cheap' there are plenty of 'as found' decks out there to 'roll the dice' on. Our new technician spent much of the 1970's managing the service department of the famous Pacific Stereo chain, then on to their 'Recycle Audio' division. Heck, the guy even 'co-invented' the optical mouse (you're probably using one right now). He's our guy to restore decks such as this!

Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit. We have completely and extensively gone through the mechanicals and electronics of this unit. Entire transport was disassembled down to the chassis, and every mechanical part was cleaned, re-lubed and reassembled. FF mechanism repaired. Previous, minor, PB amp circuit board modifications by 'hack' repair, reverted to stock. 'Direction Change Stopper' wheel, resurfaced / rebuilt for correct tension arm operation. 'Auto-Stop' mechanism disassembled and re-lubed with fresh 300,000 silicon damping fluid. Also hub brakes have been cleaned, re-lubed, new brake pads installed and adjusted on fast wind modes also. Motor 'start / run' capacitors checked. All three motors were re-lubed. Voltage set for correct North American AC current at 117-120VAC. All internal pots / controls cleaned in both the playback amplifier, record amplifiers and the built-in 'audio' amp and tested for noise-free function. New VU meter illumination lamps / bulbs installed. Both spindles were completely disassembled, cleaned and had their bearings / bushings cleaned and re-lubed and are in perfect alignment. Main Drive and both counter belts replaced for trouble-free service. Rubber pinch roller was removed, cleaned & reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip. We also adjusted the reel table heights.  Tape heads and entire transports demagnetized. Heads in great shape as well, with many hundreds of hours of performance left in them and head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL 1k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k & 15k tones thru an oscilloscope. Plays INCREDIBLY WELL and Records well at avg - 2.5dB 1k to 15kHz. Both PB output levels and VU meters playback internally adjusted for even response.

ü  Supply / Take-up 'back tension' adjusted.

ü  Reel Motors 'start / run' capacitors checked.

ü  All three motors were re-lubed.

ü  Voltage selector set for correct North American AC current at 117-120VAC.

ü  VU meter illumination lamps / bulbs check fine.

ü
Both spindles were completely disassembled, cleaned and had their bearings / bushings cleaned and re-lubed and are in perfect alignment.

ü  Heights adjusted on both reel tables.

ü  Main Drive and both counter belts reconditioned / replaced for trouble-free service.

ü  Rubber pinch roller was removed, cleaned & reconditioned, as well as all internal drive tires / wheels for positive grip.

ü  Tape heads and entire transport cleaned and demagnetized.

ü  Heads in great shape as well, and should have many hundreds of hours of performance left in them.

ü  Head alignment / azimuth has been checked for peak performance on both play and record heads with factory STL 1k, 5k, 7.5k, 10k & 15k tones with oscilloscope.

ü  Plays INCREDIBLY WELL

ü Adjusted to record @ a fairly respectable -6dB @ 1kHz on normal bias tape and ~ -4dB on 'High Bias'

ü Floor noise measured at >-60dB w/ blank tape, L&R

ü  Both PB output levels and VU meters playback internally adjusted for even response.

ü  We really put them through the paces, testing both with well mixed, recently recorded CD material and CD recorded / factory test tones looking for correct head Azimuth and speed accuracy). Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition.

ü  All internal speed pots adjusted to 100% accuracy on each speed independently, via cir bd micro-pots, utilizing 'Institute of High Fidelity' test tape meaning that 1Khz tape plays back at 1000Hz +/-1Hz!

ü  Following electro/mechanical restoration, unit received a cosmetic
cleaning / detailing. About the only cosmetic issues remaining are: are a few 'minor battle scars' cosmetically with a few chips in the Formica finish on the casing edges and a few scuffs / scratches on the front panel and the "F & F" badge missing from the head cover (see photos above).

ü  (Total time investment in refurb / testing ~ 20+ hours).
Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

GREAT performing Sony TC-758 1/4" Open Reel stereo tape deck with...

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

The only issue seems to be (and it seems to be the case with all TC-758's we've encountered) is that the 'spindle lock springs' are a bit 'weaker' than they probably should be which means that with some 10.5" reels, you will get a bit of 'rattle' when 'fast winding' if the reels are not well balanced. While most reels did not exhibit the issue, we experienced this with a few of our reels and attributed it to the spindle springs, and "no", they're not adjustable. We had the same thing with a couple of previous TC-758's over the years, and have had two folks email in with the same question. Just an FYI.

Again, following the above stated bench work / testing, our technician has 'Certified' this deck and it is an great performer sonically and mechanically. This deck has had EXTENSIVE restoration with the above mentioned 20+ hours of tech time. Restored, extensively tested / played, then re-benched after 'burn-in' to double check performance / adjustments. As stated earlier, about the only issue seems to be the 'mechanical' rattle with some 10.5" reels that aren't 'well balanced'.
Also handy for archiving / researching / revisiting your tapes prior to 'digitizing' them. Can include a pdf 'e' copy of the Sony TC-758 Owners manual (
courtesy "manualslib.com") and a copy of the Sony TC-758 service manual if the purchaser wishes. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty. Measures 17.2" wide x 8.75" deep x 17.75" tall and weighs 54 lbs unpacked.
(Reels & tape shown in photos not included. All are sometimes available separately depending on stock levels.)

This is a BEAUTIFUL, brushed Pewter face deck with complimenting brushed, Silver knobs. The Sony TC-K8B, Stereo Cassette Tape Deck w/ F&F heads, IC logic,
Liquid Crystal meters, and Dolby NR. This was one of the first units to utilize 'Liquid Crystal', and they are quite unique looking to most of the examples that followed. This was Sony's top of the line units at the time and retailed for $850.00 in 1978 which is equivalent to over $3,200.00 today!!! That should give you an idea of the stature of this deck for it's time.

Sony TC-K8B Features include:

Fast Wind Time:

Again, we have completely refurbished and thoroughly tested this deck, with multiple recording tests (as stated previously it took 16+ hours of tech time to do it proper justice). This is a VERY handsome deck (the photos can't do it justice). Cosmetically, it's in excellent condition! About the only items worth mentioning is slight wear to some of the silk screened lettering, primarily near the 'Peak Hold' selectors, some light scratches to the left, side panel of the sheet metal housing and some 'spots / splotching' to a couple areas of the face (we weren't able to remove by any of our normal means. See photos above).
Great deck for just about any system. Also great for transferring your tape collection to CD, Hard-drive or MP3.
Measures 17" wide x 12.25" deep x 6.75" tall
and weighs a VERY HEAVY 26+ lbs unpacked. Just in-case you 'too casually' read past that last little bit,
IT'S A TWENTY-SIX POUND CASSETTE DECK!

ü Our technician has completely and EXTENSIVELY gone through and 'Certified' this unit which involves complete removal and disassembly of the entire tape transport, cleaning inside and out, DISASSEMBLING, cleaning and re-lubricating all internal mechanisms and the balance of efforts listed below (unit actually worked very well prior to disassembly as well).

ü Heads inspected for excessive wear (obviously we do this 'early on' as 'excessive' wear will usually negate any further restoration work).

ü All new internal Capstan Drive belts replaced for trouble-free service (Dual Capstan design).

ü New 'Shift Roller' acquired (from Slovikia) and installed.

ü Left Rubber pinch roller has been replaced also sourced from Slovikia

ü Capstan 'Thrust Bearings' cleaned and re-lubed w/ silicone based lube

ü Heads have been cleaned and de-magnetized as well as the entire transport.

ü Head alignments and azimuth at 125Hz, 1kHz and 10kHz adjusted for 'peak performance' with O-Scope. Both channels now even w/ 'max' output.

ü All internal pots, switches and controls cleaned and tested for noise-free function.

ü Both spindles in perfect alignment.

ü
FF, REW, & Play transport functions all test perfectly and controls tested for 'positive / accurate' responsive.

ü Eject door 'Auto mechanism' operates smoothly.

ü Tape Counter Function tested

ü Dolby B & C NR circuits / function tested

ü HX-Pro tested

ü 'Memory / Zero Return' function tested

ü Heads are in great condition

ü Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric input.

ü Pinch roller and heads all in GREAT condition!!!

ü Both Internal playback amplifier channels adjusted for 'even output'

ü Meters adjusted to even zero with symmetric input.

ü Both Internal Record amplifier channels adjusted for 'even output'

ü Playback meters zero with factory test tone tape.

ü Speed tests at 100% accuracy (this deck has a 'FG-Servo / Synchronous' motor with a circuit board mounted, 'Comparator' system to maintain perfect speed so is 'always' 'on speed'), with 1kHz factory calibration tape (meaning 1kHz calibration tape plays back at 1000Hz +/- 1Hz)

ü
Cosmetics are not great. The sheet metal case has some creases / dents (don't know how they got there), and the originally, optional Rose wood side panels have a few dents (don't know if they were there before someone acquired them, or happened after installation). The wood panels could be removed, and we thought about it, but even with their cosmetic issues, they add to it's overall look being left intact.
ü Plays perfectly and after adjustment, records AMAZINGLY well. Normally we would give a "dB Down or UP" rating / results, but this deck has so many ways to have it's record levels and quality 'tweaked' that there's no 'one number' that can be assigned to it. Yes it can record at 'positive dB's' but with different attributes depending on the tape type and how 'hot' you wish to record. We found the best results with at Maxell UDXL-II tapes. We tried recordings using the 'Calibration' system, but usually found that we liked adjusting the 'Bias' control to suit our ears. Then we discovered the +/-3dB 'Record Level' control (No not the typical "Input Level" control, that is always labeled "Record Level", but a control on the outside that gives you access to the actual 'internal "record level"' normally located on the circuit board and adjustable by a technician via 'pc mounted' pots. This opened up a whole new layer of recording that we normally only get to experiment with while a unit is on the bench.
While doing the test recording's, it became apparent that this decks recording capabilities were AMAZING.

Total technician time to restore 8+ hours.

The Sony TC-K850ES, 3-Head / 3-Motor Cassette Tape Deck. Great deck for doing your tape transfers if your tapes were recorded with no NR or with "Dolby B" or "Dolby C", but REALLY SHINES if you want to make new tapes as it's got HX-PRO and 'TONS' of serious recording features. Again, as stated above, records AMAZINGLY well! Also has 'gear driven' reel tables, which means there not 'pesky' idler tire or drive belts to worry about (which takes 'eating tapes' off the table).

SONY TC-K850ES Features include:

Again, we have completely cleaned, refurbished / serviced and thoroughly tested this SONY TC-K850ES cassette tape deck.
It does have a few 'battle scars' (see above photos), but will make up for it in performance, again check the recording results, and the 1kHz = 1kHz speed!
If I didn't already have 'a sufficient number' of cassette decks in my collection, this one wouldn't be leaving, especially after experimenting with the 'Bias and Record Level' controls.
