One of the
most famous speaker models ever made. The Bose 501's. These are the 4th
generation, the "Series IV's". Features Bose's famous "Direct / Reflecting"
cabinet design. Has front firing 10" woofer and two angled / side firing,
"Reflecting" tweeters.
Our speaker tech
has completely gone through and 'Certified' these.
These have been completely gone through, including
having the foam surrounds replaced on the woofers (which is no easy task on
this model due to tricky grill removal / reinstallation). The 501's are
probably the most difficult of the Bose or any speaker to access the drivers
as the grills are stapled on with brads). Another note on the Bose 501 and
most Bose foam surrounds. It is a safe bet that there are NO Bose 501's out
there that are over 15 years old (and most are) that do not need the foam
replaced on the surrounds. Even if it looks good, if you can stick your
finger through it, (and you will be able to) or it feels "sticky", it needs
to be replaced. It won't last many songs (probably only part way thru the
first one) at any decent volume if you don't.
The difficulty in re-foaming 501's is that the grills are nailed on with
about 30, well hidden brads and beyond the resource level of most people to
deal with. Thus, when they test them briefly, they get some sound and sell
them as "speakers work fine and as they should". WRONG!!! They all need new
foam if it hasn't already been done in the past 15 years. Again, these, as
with most of our speakers, have just had fresh, new foam installed on the
drives if applicable. I just had to reiterate that due to all the mis-information
out there, especially on the "on-line" auctions. We also checked the
internal Tweeter protection lamps. All tweeters in perfect working order.

These
are in NEAR NEW cosmetic shape with the only issue being a missing logo from
one of the grills. The top edge banding vinyl veneer all perfect. The
cabinet corners and edges all sharp and crisp. Virtually no wear to the
tops. The original grill frames solid and cloth in beautiful condition and
required only minor cleaning.
And remember, we have just replaced the foam surrounds on all woofers, for
trouble free service. Following the above work, we completely
tested them with both recorded material, PN 20-20k and swept them with our AF
generator from 20-5,000 Hz and feeding them with the output from our Hafler
P-225 Pro Power Amp, looking for any vibrations or other anomalies. We then
further auditioned with a myriad of our difficult to reproduce 'test' CD's.
Entire cabinet has been frequency swept while being powered by our Hafler
test amp. They sounded great! Given that the 'IV' series covers almost 10
YEARS it was obviously a successful, proven design! Cabinets measure 25" H x
16" W x 15" D and weigh 42 lbs each. Comes with an
emailed copy of the owners manual. Includes our standard 30 day
limited warranty (excluding problems due to under / over powering)

....(Side note; The 601
series II and III's are equally decent sounding, HOWEVER are a
'nightmare' to pack adequately for safe shipment. So much of a
nightmare, that unless you have the ORIGINAL packaging I don't recommend
it! The tweeters in the series II & III protrude out of the top of the
cabinet and have to be protected in such a way that none of their
packaging can be allowed to touch them in transit. If it does it is
likely that the top grill frames will be destroyed. That either requires
the grills and all the top components to be removed, packed and shipped
separately and then re-installed upon arrival (probably not practical),
or as we did on the last pair of series II's we had, custom and very
expensive packaging designed so that nothing could touch the top of the
speakers, even if dropped on their tops. This is NOT typically going to
be something that very many packers are going to be capable of. Due to
the amount of requests we get for replacement grills and tweeter mounts,
I am confident that most that are shipped by 'individual' sellers or
packed by folks inexperienced in packing Bose 601 Series II's and III's
are damaged or destroyed. We have a few thousand dollars worth of
packing materials and 15+ years of experience and it took us 6 'man
hours' to pack the last pair of series II's! The Original series do NOT
have these issues as the cabinets come all the way to the top.)
This
is a 'One Owner' pair and we purchased them with an entire 'high end'
audio system from a military serviceman who brought them back from
overseas. They have been well cared for.
Our speaker tech

trim that was attached with staples and reattached w/ adhesive foam to

factory seals. Beautiful, real walnut wood veneer cabinets give a fresh
rub down with.....

Again if you're after a pair of "Vintage" Bose, the 601 are,
in our opinion, the best sounding of the classic
Bose designs.
This pair especially excels on most
classical and jazz styles. Again, the 'Real'
wood Walnut grain veneer, cabinets in
near NEW shape as are the grills. The cabinet
corners and edges all sharp and crisp. The original grill frames solid
and cloth in beautiful condition and required only minor cleaning. And
remember, we have just replaced the foam surrounds on all 4 woofers, for

So why are you not seeing more Series II and
Series III of the Bose 601 model?
The 601
series II and III's are equally decent sounding to the originals, HOWEVER are a

Classic and sought after Bose 901, Series I (originals)
Stereo speakers. These are the speakers that made Bose famous. Designed
around Boses' "Direct Reflecting" audio principle. Utilizes 9, 4"
- 1 Ohm drivers. When placed correctly there is
one front firing driver (the direct aspect) and 8 rear firing drivers (the
reflecting aspect). One great thing about the Series I is that all the
drivers utilize non-deteriorating cloth suspension instead of the
deteriorating foam used in the later series versions.
These were designed to create the most "Life Like" concert experience.
These are also very durable from a power handling standpoint.
While they are designed to be used with their
included Bose 901e, Active EQ system, you may utilize
any EQ with more that satisfactory results. All drivers work and
sound fine! Tested for all frequencies with a sweep generator.
There are some minor to fairly serious cosmetic issues
with this pair. The real Walnut wood veneer have
some dark rings from something being set
on top of them and a damaged
corner. One of the connection terminals is bent mildly but this
doesn't affect the operation at all (see lower photos).
We thought about keeping them ourselves to use as we
didn't mind the damage, but there are likely a few of you out there that
would appreciate them just as much and also not think the cosmetic issues
are a big deal, or already know how to improve the looks of them with some
"elbow grease". The original Linen / Burlap woven grills in near
new shape. If you are looking for a vintage Bose speaker system then here
you go. You won't be disappointed. Each cabinet measures 13"h x
20.5"w x 13"d and weigh 36 lbs each unpacked. Includes our
standard 30 day limited warranty ( excluding problems due to under / over
powering).
