EARLY 1930's ERA This was the period when radio really took off from just experimental units to more ergonomic designs. The controls were simplified (tuning in a station on some of the original late 20's and early 1930's radios required tuning 3 different knobs just to tune in ONE AM station) and the cabinets more resembled furniture than scientific instruments. Radio programming became more abundant, and of much higher standards and quality. Radios also became much more accessible for the majority of the population and quickly became the center of evening entertainment for many families. 1950's ERA This was the prosperous post World War II era. While the earlier periods had concentrated on cosmetic design and upgrades, the 50's ushered in a trend towards better, more advanced circuit designs while still retaining "style". Still a far cry from today's standards, 1950's radios were much more reliable, efficient, lighter, safer, and less expensive than their predecessors. Some were also introducing alarm clocks that tied into the radio. Waking up became a bit more enjoyable. The 1950's also saw the introduction of the Jukebox. They were a huge hit! You couldn't go to any diner, cafe, roadhouse, or club and not see a beautifully designed jukebox with lots of glowing neon, bubbles and chrome. Unfortunately it also seems that it was a fleeting time for their designs. Soon after that they rapidly became very "boring" in cosmetic appeal. You can still find examples of the original 50's jukeboxes for sale, but they have become extremely valuable, with some costing in excess of $15,000.
