SERPENTINE BELT SIZE ON FORD F-150 WHEN REMOVING SMOG PUMP

These are notes from our successful efforts to find and install a replacement serpentine belt on a 1991 Ford F-150, pickup truck when the smog pump seized / 'froze up'. This is ONLY information pertinent to our situation. We do not know how many models this could be applied to or anything about any other versions, or anything beyond what we are showing here. We do not necessarily recommend you do this, nor remove your smog pump, nor make the belt substitution, nor anything under the hood on a vehicle without qualified, knowledgeable personnel to assist.

Use these photos as a guide / diagram of Serpentine belt on 1991 or similar Ford F150, Lariat, 302 engine pickup truck.

These are photos from a job we did on a friends 1991, Ford F-150, Lariat pickup truck to bypass the smog / air pump pulley that had seized and we needed an 'emergency repair / temporary fix'. Prior to attempting to deduce the proper size of serpentine belt, we did a bit of web research on the web for, "What length / size / how many inches serpentine belt when removing / bypass the smog / air pump pulley seized… on a 1991, Ford F-150, Lariat 302 engine / motor pickup truck... and we looked for the "Correct length of belt in inches is?." (the folks we spoke with at Pep Boys, Checker, Orielly, NAPA, & Advance Auto parts did not have any 'substitute info available). We found no one that knew the exact size / length. Lots of guesses. A couple mentioned some 'bolt head' that the belt would hit if you tried

to 'short cut' between other pulleys without going around the smog pump. The 'work around' that was suggested was another 'bypass pulley' or 'delete pulley' installed in place the Ford factory smog pump. To estimate the size of belt, in inches, we would need we used a piece of string (someone held the 'auto-tensioner' pulley in it's 'mid' position with a wrench. Not an easy task) to get a measurement and to judge whether a bolt, bolt head or anything else would be in the belt path. We came up with....

We actually purchased to above 6-Groove serpentine belts to try:
A 'Mileage Maker' 900K6MK / 6PK2285 which corresponds to a; Goodyear 4060900, Gates K060900 & Dayco 5060900.,
&
A 'Mileage Maker' 875K6MK / 6PK2225 which corresponds to a; Goodyear 4060875, Gates K060875 or K060874 & Dayco 5060878.,
&
A 'Mileage Maker' 827K6MK / 6PK2100 which corresponds to a; Goodyear 4060827, Gates K060827 or K060828 & Dayco 5060827 or 5060825.

This belt fit and works perfectly for our particular situation, again, early 1990's, Ford, F150, Lariat pickup with Ford 302 engine, when smog pump is removed / by-passed.

....87.5 inches and no obstructions. We purchase 3 belts at Pep Boys ($20-25 each), the one we thought would be the correct size (Mileage Maker Belt 87.5" and 6 grooves) and a couple of 'flanking' sizes. The first one we tried fit perfectly. The auto-tensioning roller applied the correct amount of tension. Worked perfectly.
