Did you know?
It would be hard to name a category of 'musical instruments', 'audio equipment', 'motorized vehicles', or 'sporting equipment' that Yamaha does not have a 'hand in' with 'branded models'. Most folks do not realize this, but Yamaha is one of the oldest companies in existence, certainly when it comes to music gear and was actually established in 1887 and was incorporated on October 12, 1897! The company's origins as a musical instrument manufacturer is still reflected today in the group's logo—a trio of interlocking tuning forks. Yamaha has grown to become the world's largest manufacturer of musical instruments. I have worked for Yamaha dealers over the years, in both the 'consumer' level and 'pro-audio' / 'MI' level. Their gear was 'spec'd' more often in the military contracts we received, than any other brand. I knew when I sold a Yamaha unit, there was little chance of an 'issue after the sale'. Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.
Everything was cleaned inside and out including all contacts, switches and controls. Amplifier outputs checked and defective transistors replaced with OEM, not subs! DC offset and bias PC mounted pots cleaned and current adjusted to within spec. Floor noise measured at 00.4mVAC. Dial and meter lamps / bulbs currently working. AM 'ferrite' antenna internally adjusted for max signal. FM and AM front end aligned for optimum performance (While the FM is as good as most quality tuners, the AM is exceptional on this unit!) Entire unit cleaned / detailed cosmetically inside and out. All inputs tested and both side produces clean and even sine waves into static 8 & 4 ohm loads! No power supply hum of any kind. It's dead silent! All functions test fine. Following restoration procedures, the unit was run continuously at medium volume, as all our amplifier / receivers are, into a load with "Loudness" on and both Tone Controls at 10 for 48 hours and into a 4 Ohm Load!

Re-tensioned tuner string to relieve flywheel binding and re-centered pointer to correct dial position. VERY GOOD TUNER! Generally AM reception in a stereo receiver is treated as an 'after thought', but the AM reception on this one, #...6588, is WAY above average. VERY GOOD TUNER! FM reception as well great and IMPECCABLY CLEAN!!! We replaced ALL dial, meter and the dial pointer lamps with new units for trouble-free service. All inputs tested and both sides produce clean and even sine waves into 'brick-wall' 8 & 4 ohm loads!
   
   On our test bench, the internal amplifiers of this receiver #...6588 produced 20 volts per channel @ 8 ohms with 1Khz input for 50 watts and 17 volts per channel @ 4 ohms with 1Khz input for 72 watts via dual, Yamaha branded power packs, IG-20980 supplied by Yamaha IG 02950 voltage amplfiers.
 AC Idle current at .4A, DC offset output <+/-1mvDC either channel. Floor noise at 00.2mVAC either channel.

All output transistors removed, independently tested on our Huntron Tracker semiconductor analyzer and reinstalled with fresh heat sink compound. Output transistor bias adjusted to correct 08.0mv. Re-tensioned internal fuse holder clips. Re-tensioned tuner string to relieve flywheel binding and re-centered pointer to correct dial position. Balance of tuner string inspected and weak section replaced.
We replaced ALL meter lamps and the dial pointer lamps with new units for trouble-free service. All inputs tested and both sides produce clean and even sine waves into 'brick-wall' 8 & 4 ohm loads! Total restoration time investment ~14 hours.
   
On our test bench, the internal amplifiers of this Yamaha CR-820 receiver #...6787 produced 24.3 volts per channel @ 8 ohms with 1Khz input for 73 watts and 20.4 volts per channel @ 4 ohms with 1Khz input for 104 watts via discrete, TO3, metal cased output devices (2x Toshiba 2SB557 & 2SD427 output transistors).
 AC Idle current at .25A, DC offset output <17mVDC either channel. Floor noise at 00.3mVAC either channel.

Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit, cleaning everything including all switches, controls and contacts for quiet, positive operation.  We also aligned the tuner front-end for optimum performance as older tuner components have drifted over the years. Only issue that seems to be, is the 'OTS' tuning system seems to be only partially working. Most tuners do not have this, and frankly the few by other brands we have come thru, seem to have similar issues. Means when you remove your hand from the tuning knob, the tuner should 'lock', and an LED lights up. The tuner locks in fine to stations, but the LED only lights dimly. Not 'monetarily practical' to chase. All output transistors removed, independently tested on our Huntron Tracker semiconductor analyzer and reinstalled with fresh heat sink compound. Output transistor bias adjusted to correct xxmV . Re-tensioned internal fuse holder clips. Re-tensioned tuner string to relieve flywheel binding and re-centered pointer to correct dial position. Balance of tuner string inspected and weak section replaced.

ü Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' this unit.

ü We have completely gone through this unit cleaning everything including all switches, controls and contacts. Extensive cleaning of unit internally.

ü Internal fuses checked for continuity and correct values. (corrected one fuse from a "32V" to a "250V")

ü Controls were 'flooded' w/ 'De-OxId' and are quiet

ü Tuner string checked for any fraying then re-tensioned to increase traction & relieve flywheel binding and re-centered pointer to correct dial position.

ü ü ü VERY IMPORTANTLY: We have copies of the originally issued 'Service Bulletin / Recalls' (service bulletin 8-80) on this unit. We added the recommended 'Power Switch / AC convenience Outlet' jumper.
We also changed the two 3.5 Watt power resistors on the power supply board to 'higher standing', 5 Watt versions. We also inspected, removed and tested TR712 & TR715.

ü We aligned the tuner front-end for optimum AM & FM performance as older internal tuner components have always drifted on vintage gear over the years. VERY GOOD TUNER! AM seems to be an 'afterthought' on many stereo receivers and component tuners. The AM is AMAZING!!!! on this Yamaha CR-2020 (probably the best AM reception we've experienced).

ü All dial, indicator & meter lamps have been recently replaced prior to us working on the unit.

ü We also checked the heat sink compound which should be good for another 30 years.

ü Amplifier section had output bias adjusted to service manual spec levels of on both amplifiers (10mV ±1mV).

ü NOW both amplifiers have 'even' clipping on 'plus' and 'minus' rails.

ü DC offset adjusted to LOW levels on all four amplifiers.

ü All inputs tested and both side produces clean and even sine waves into 'brick-wall' 8 & 4 Ohm loads! No power supply hum of any kind. It's dead silent! All functions test fine.
Total restoration time investment 12+ hours.

ü Following restoration procedures, the unit was run continuously at medium volume, as all our amplifier / receivers are, into a load with "Loudness" on and both Tone Controls at 10 for 72 hours into a 4 Ohm load.
 
ü On our test bench, this particular Yamaha CR-2020, #...6283, amplifiers each produced 33 Volts per channel for 136 Watts per channel @ 8Ω via discrete output & 28 Volts per channel for 196 Watts per channel @ 4Ω via discrete, Metal cased, TO-3 outputs, Original 2x Toshiba 2SB554 & 2x Toshiba 2SD424.
ü AC draw at idle .48A.
ü DC <24 mV either channel.
ü Floor noise measured at >-60dBm / 0.1mVAC

Again, we have completely gone through this Yamaha CR-2020 Stereo Receiver, as stated above and, it's 'certified' and 'Ready To Go'!
Huge, vertical finned heat sinks for great cooling efficiency of outputs. Great sounding 'Phono' section (check the corresponding S/N ration above). Also, check the S/N ratio of the FM tuner in 'Stereo'! The brushed Aluminum face and knobs are in LIKE NEW condition. The only cosmetic isses (and they're VERY minor) are the previously mentioned ding & chip to the real wood veneer case. Other than that the entire unit is LIKE NEW! The unit looks fabulous, works and sounds great! Includes a pdf, 'e' copy, download of the Yamaha CR-2020 owners / users / instruction manual. Receiver measures 21.25" wide x 16.5" deep x 6.5" high and weighs a heavy, 43 lbs unpacked. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty.

Great Yamaha RX-700U receiver. This was the replacement for the previous "R" series, that 'veered off the road' from Yamaha's standard by utilizing the cheaper 'STK' 'chip outputs' that most everyone else switched to as well to lower the price of electronics. It did lower the cost, but at the expense of 'sound quality'. This receiver got back on track by being designed around 'discrete output transistors' (check the power ratings). Full Audio features with the convenience of a wireless remote control.
