Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these.
We have completely tested all drivers. Both Mid and Top End attenuators had their contacts burnished and were cleaned internally for static-free performance. We ‘added’ gasketing material to the rear cabinet panel to reduce any possibilities of vibration or acoustic anomalies. Felt feet were installed to the bottom plates. Next, as always they were tested with both recorded material, PN 20-20k and swept them with our AF generator from 1Hz-3kHz. Then came our standard, 'abusive' test recordings. Cosmetically, the grills were cleaned & the cabinets 'real wood' Walnut veneer had a fresh coat of 'Feed-n-Wax' then buffed. The cabs and grills are in great shape, especially for being around 40 years old. These speakers are ready to go!

We auditioned this pair extensively and were

If you like the "Mid-70's Lattice" look with about the 'biggest' sound possible, then these would likely be great speakers for you! Again, the Real Walnut wood veneer cabinets are in excellent and beautiful shape. The original metal framed, cloth grills PERFECT!
(With these speakers you can ignore the following note we normally attach to Pioneer speakers with 'Lattice' grills, "we recommend running Pioneer 'Lattice grill' speakers with the grills removed. This recommendation would be applicable to any Pioneer 'CS' series speaker with 'real' wood, lattice grills.")
Again, we have completely gone through these and they're 'Ready to Rock'. Measure 28.5"h x 19"w x 13"d and weigh 63 lbs each unpacked. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty ( excluding problems due to under / over powering).

PIONEER CS-99, CS-88A, CS-77A & CS-66G TWEETER REPAIR / SURROUND RE-FOAM / RE-EDGE

JUST FYI FOR FOLKS LOOKING FOR
PIONEER CS-99, CS-88A, CS-77A & CS-66G
MODEL SPEAKERS.

Pioneer utilized foam surrounds on the tweeters of these 4 models. After 20+ years, it will be difficult to find a pair that still has the foam intact (as foam surrounds generally have a useable lifespan of 10-15 years, depending on the environment they have spent the majority of their lives in).
Essentially 100% of the "PIONEER CS-99, CS-88A, CS-77A & CS-66G" models we have seen have their tweeter foam rotted and will need to be repaired or replaced / re-foamed (yes, it might 'look' ok, but if you 'poke' it with your finger, it will crack or crumble, thus it was bad before you poked it). We have only found one suitable "fix" for this (and yes, we have searched high and low for a 4 Ohm replacement for the CS-99A, a 16 Ohm replacement for the CS-88a, or even a suitable 8 Ohm for the CS-77a, with no* success.)

NEW INFORMATION
ORANGE COUNTY SPEAKERS NOW HAS A REPLACEMENT SURROUND THAT WILL WORK ON THIS
IT WILL NEED TO BE TRIMMED SLIGHTLY ON THE OUTSIDE, BUT WORKS WELL.
THE PART NUMBER IS:
#1-023
THEIR WEB SITE IS
  www.speakerrepair.com

(This applies only to vintage Pioneer models CS-99, CS-88a, CS-77a & CS-66G tweeters).

The tweeter just to the left is from the CS-77a. Looks good, but surround is rotted.

A visibly fine surround, is still bad and will visibly deteriorate after a few songs are played on them. We see these at on-line auctions often, and in every case the speakers either still have their rotted originals or a replacement tweeter, of some-sort installed. Due to the rarity of 4 & 16 ohm tweeters, and poorly fitting '8 Ohm' tweeters out there, we have to assume that the replacement tweeters the owners / sellers have installed are of incorrect impedance, which at the least, effects high-end efficiency (volume) & at worst can create load issues for whatever amplifier they are connected to. All this while using the word "Mint" or some similar adjective to list / describe the speakers.
Again this is only prevalent in Pioneer CS-66G, CS-77a, CS-88a and CS-99 tweeters. It is not a factor with Pioneer CS-77, CS-88, CS-99a, CS-33a, CS-66a or CS-901a's tweeters.

PS. We also see a similar problem with many other manufacturers' older speakers generally from 15+ years ago, except for the earliest versions of speakers which commonly used cloth surrounds.

Any manufacturers' speaker utilizing foam surrounds (common from typically 1980 thru present) that is over 10 years old should be suspect.

PSS. Even though a speakers foam surrounds may "look" fine, they probably are not! Vintage speakers posted for sale by individuals & at 'on-line' auctions / yard sales have commonly not been in use for many years (other wise they probably wouldn't be for sale). In many cases, once you start playing them more than a couple minutes, you can watch the foam disintegrate (especially on the woofer) right before your eyes, just by playing 2 or 3 songs at above average volume levels.

PSSS.
*We have discovered a tweeter from at least one model of 'Sony' (the Sony SSU-1270, Tweeter part number; #1-502-560-11), MAY be a suitable replacement for the Pioneer CS-88A tweeter, but we haven't tried one yet. It, most importantly, is 16 Ohms, so if one could be 'shoe-horned' in place, it MIGHT function fine. Again, we have done no tests yet.

Just FYI while you're out looking.

This model was one of the Pioneer "Flag-Ships" of the famous 'CS' line and are vastly upgraded "A" version featuring 'FB' cones and....  HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

These are great speakers in all aspects. You couldn't ask for... HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

We auditioned this pair extensively and were VERY surprised at their performance. Following the above mentioned 'barrage', our demo cuts ran the gamut from Dire Straits' "So Far Away" from their album 'Brothers in Arms', Donald Fagens, "I.G.Y." from the album "Night Fly", '24K Gold Edition of Jennifer Waren's "Famous Blue Raincoat', TLC's "Scrub" from their album 'Fan Mail' (did 'sub-bass' note @ 1'25" & 1'35" VERY well.

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

If you like the "Mid-70's Lattice" look with about the 'biggest' sound possible, then these would likely be great speakers for you! These appear to have spent  most of their life in their boxes. There was hardly any dust on them when we started their restoration. The original and REAL, Walnut wood veneer is essentially perfect, as are the grills. (we recommend running Pioneer 'Lattice grill' speakers with the grills removed. They used small metal clips for decoration and structural integrity, at each junction of the grill lattice waves. These can be a source of extraneous noise at different frequencies. This recommendation would be applicable to any Pioneer 'CS' series speaker with 'real' wood, lattice grills. Just FYI.)
We have completely gone thru these speakers. We tested each driver independently. Both attenuators have 'painstakingly' had their contacts burnished and cleaned for 'drop-out-free' performance. Following the above work, we completely tested them with both recorded material, PN and swept them with our AF generator from 20-20,000 Hz and feeding them with the output from our Hafler P-225 Pro Power Amp, looking for any irregular vibrations / anomalies in either the drivers. driver mounting, crossovers or cabinet structure integrity. We then further auditioned with a myriad of our difficult to reproduce 'test' CD's. Entire cabinet has been frequency swept while being powered by our Hafler test amp. They performed flawlessly and sounded great! Again, we have completely gone through these and they're 'Ready to Rock'. This pair comes with original boxes and packing. Measure 24.75"h x 16.5"w x 11.5"d and weigh a heavy 52 lbs each unpacked. Includes our standard 30 day limited warranty ( excluding problems due to under / over powering).

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

These speaker had our full attention and service. Many 'vintage' speakers featured attenuators to tailor the top and mid-range levels. While this can be accomplished using a variety of different component choices, they are always going to be a 'service point' and will need to be cleaned to achieve consistent sound. The controls on the CS-A700 (and a few others) speakers are VERY difficult to service. To service them, we completely removed the crossover / input panel, then dissect / remove the shaft / switch components from the switch body. Once disassembled, then all copper traces and contacts can be burnished and 're-sprung'. Once reassembled, they function perfectly. It's a very time consuming process, but the only way to insure any level of performance. Otherwise, you'll only hear the woofer.
Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these. We further completely tested all drivers and inspected the gasketing material under all driver frames, as well as the back panel to insure they can reduce any possibilities of vibration or acoustic anomalies, then tested with both recorded material, PN 20-20k and swept them with our AF generator from 20-20kHz. Speakers cleaned inside and out. Cabinets were spruced up with a fresh coat of lemon oil. With the exception of a 'plant water circle' on the top of one, they look great. All drivers work and sound fine! Tested for all frequencies with a sweep generator. Also features a 'True', 3-way cross-over for super clean response especially in the "low end".
Both look and sound GREAT! Huge, accurate and loud 'Wall-O-Sound'. Very efficient as well. Check the spec!

Entry model into the famous "HPM" series. The HPM-40's. The HPM series was the line designed after the famed JBL L-100 / 4311 series by personnel from JBL. These were and still are one of the best sounding, most accurate Hi-Fi speakers available. These never hang around the shop long on the rare occasion we acquire a set. These are in immaculate condition, both cosmetically and sonically.

Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these.
He has completely disassembled them further, testing all drivers independently. No material issues found with any of the drivers. Each was 'swept' with the AF generator while removed. All drivers were re-installed with the addition of gasketing material to further seal and eliminate any ‘flange to baffle’ rattles and buzzes. Attenuators cleaned and quiet. Grills clean and inspected for breaks. Entire speaker system then swept with our AF generator from 20-5,000 Hz and feeding them with the output from our Hafler 500 (250 watts per channel) Pro Power Amp, looking for any irregular vibrations / anomalies in either the drivers. driver mounting, crossovers or cabinet structure integrity.  Next we auditioned them with our standard, 'abusive' demo / testing CD's / cuts running the gamut from Dire Straits, 'Brothers in Arms', TLC 'Fan Mail', Allison Kraus and Union Station, Nickelback, a digital recording of a cathedral pipe organ, our 'Usher Speaker' demo CD (no not that Usher), 'Friday Night in San Francisco', with Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia, Nickel Creek's Why Should the Fire Die, Jennifer Warnes, "Famous Blue Raincoat", and a few others, all digitally recorded and some 'DDD'. Performed great as expected. The last pair of these we had (about 5 years ago) actually were sold to a recording studio to use as monitors.

Their 3-way design features:

One of the top 'Classics' and of course, one of the most sought after speaker models ever made. The Pioneer HPM-100's...and these are the 200 Watt versions! It's been exactly four (4) years since we've had a pair of "200 Watters".
It's hard to expand on what's already been written out there about these speakers. Most fans of these know some version of the HPM-100 / JBL L100 story or link to an appreciation web site. They have been one of my favorites for some years now, and I finally just finished a pair for myself to keep. They are capable of high volume levels while producing "pounding" & "tight" bass (mostly due to the cast frames and carbon-fiber mix woofers) with great balance on the top and mid end. Just a great 'all around' speaker. Just as happy with a small-medium size amp as they are with amps of larger size (however, probably not efficient enough to enjoy with a small wattage or single ended tube amp).

Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these. Speakers were entirely disassembled. All drivers removed. Crossover components and internal circuit boards were inspected for any possible 'sympathetic' component vibrations. We replaced one of the 'commonly wrinkled' midranges, that also had dents in the dust cap, with a clean, original. One of the woofers arrived with some sort of 'black stain' or maybe 'soot' splotching parts of white cone. It took a lot of different solvents to finally find one that would clean it off. In doing so, some of the white finish was removed from the crests of the ridges in that woofer cone. Cosmetics only (see photos above). Our tech has completely tested all drivers, then re-assembled with their original and adequate gasketing material under all driver frames to further reduce any possibilities of vibration or acoustic anomalies, and tested with both recorded material, PN and swept them with our AF generator from 20-3kHz. Following, of course our normal barrage of 'pink noise' and an AF sweep from 3k down to 20Hz, our demo cuts ran the gamut from Dire Straits, 'Brothers in Arms', TLC 'Fan Mail', Allison Kraus and Union Station, KORN's version of 'Word Up', Nickelback, a digital recording of a cathedral pipe organ, our 'Usher Speaker' demo CD (no not that Usher), 'Friday Night in San Francisco', with Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia, Nickel Creek's Why Should the Fire Die, Jennifer Warnes, 'Famous Blue Raincoat', and a few others, all digitally recorded and some 'DDD'.
Incredible power handling characteristics. They are able to handle "power" better MUCH than your average speaker. Not simply referring to they're wattage rating, but just the way the perform at higher power / volume levels without "falling apart" sonically. We 'stood' on them HARD with our test Hafler 225 watt power amp.
Cabinets cleaned, then had a coat of Lemon Oil rubbed into the 'real' Walnut wood veneer and are in great shape. Speakers only have very minor scuffs / striations that have mostly disappeared with Lemon oil. There were a couple of further stains on the black baffle board that could not be removed completely (see photos above). Grills have new, heavier duty, black, knit grill cloth installed. These speakers look and perform great!

This pair is also one of THE CLEANEST, most 'issue-free' pair we've had! In fact, just had a fresh, professional re-veneer in beautiful walnut wood grain veneer, then rubbed with lemon oil. Grills and grill frames in great condition. All grill locating pins intact and functioning. No breaks, cat stains, tears, rips or snags to the original grill cloth. Also, VERY importantly, NONE of the very common 'midrange wrinkling' that for some reason happens to about 50% of the HPM-100's we see.

ü  Our technician has completely gone through and 'Certified' these speakers.

ü  Speakers were entirely disassembled.

ü  Attenuators were removed, completely disassembled (not really designed to be done, but is necessary and requires a lot of 'tedious' effort), cleaned of old / 'sticky' lube, and burnished the silver plated tracks with a fiberglass pen for static free operation, re-lubed and re-assembled. That operation is the only way to ensure the mids and tweeters on these and most any speaker with a 'rotary attenuator' will function properly for years to come.

ü  Super Tweeters replaced. This is much more involved than it might sound on the surface. We have previously written about the Super Tweeters on HPM's on some of our other pages, so we won't belabor it here, but suffice to say we ordered in and bench tested 7 tweeters to get 2 that not only functioned 'CONSISTENTLY' (meaning not just when 'torsionally stressed'), but had 'strong' (strong for this particular tweeter) and 'matched' output. That is, needless to say, an 'expensive' and time consuming additional process.

ü  One 'Tweeter' replaced. What's the 'big deal' there. Well...we tested 2 (the original and a spare we ordered that supposedly "worked find" that exhibited minor to very noticable 'buzzing' when swept from 3k to 9kHz (wouldn't have likely shown up if you're only testing with random, recorded material as most sellers do). The third on (out of one in our personal collection) did not have a 'buzz' and sounded great so we utilized that one (we'll get a replacement for ours later)

ü  One of the crossovers had a blown-up (literally) 'top end' capacitor, but all the drivers in the speaker still functioned, and this would not have been caught if we hadn't done our standard disassembly / inspection. We could have changed the capacitor, but it was either to simply install a replacement crossover.

ü  Crossover components and internal circuit boards were further inspected for any possible 'sympathetic' component vibrations.

ü  Our tech then added 'poly-spun', acoustic damping material internally as Pioneer seemed a bit 'stingy' originally.

ü  Our tech has completely tested all drivers, then re-assembled with their original  gasketing where adequate and additional gasketing material, where needed, under all driver frames to further reduce any possibilities of vibration or acoustic anomalies.

ü  Following reassembly, both were tested PN and swept them with our AF generator from all the way down to 5Hz-10kHz.

HEY, WHY ALL THE 'X'd' OUT / OMITTED SPECS AND TEXT?

Our speaker tech has completely gone through and 'Certified' these. Woofers were both re-foamed with fresh, new and 'correct' surrounds with perfect centering. We have completely tested all drivers. Both Mid and Top End attenuators were cleaned internally
for static-free performance. All drivers were removed and tested individually. One of the 'Super Tweeters' (the really cool looking top one) was 'weaker' than the other, so we sourced and tested between 5 of them (Polymer, piezo driven 'Super Tweeters) to get the most efficient pair to replace. Gasketing material was added to all driver mounting flanges, prior to re-installation. We ‘added’ gasketing material the base and the lower cabinet, and between the woofer cab, and the 'mid-tweet' module, to further reduce any possibilities of vibration or acoustic anomalies. Felt feet were installed to the bottom plates. Cosmetically, the grills were cleaned & the cabinets 'real wood' Walnut veneer had a fresh coat of 'Feed-n-Wax' then buffed. The original 'Smoked Glass' top plates are chip, scratch and crack free. The cabs and grills (some fairly typical 'cat snags' to the black knit and a small, 'older repair ding' on the edge of the upper module - see above photos) are in great shape, especially for being around 33 years old. Next, as always they were tested with both recorded material, PN 20-20k and swept them with our AF generator from 1Hz-3kHz. Then came our standard, 'issue exposing' and on some levels, 'abusive' test recordings. These speakers are ready to go!
We auditioned this pair extensively and 'THEY....

our demo cuts ran the gamut from Dire Straits' "So Far Away" from their album 'Brothers in Arms' album, Donald Fagens, "I.G.Y." from the album "Night Fly", '24K Gold Edition of Jennifer Waren's "Famous Blue Raincoat', TLC's "Scrub" from their album 'Fan Mail'
(did 'sub-bass' note @ 1'25" & 1'35" VERY WELL), Allison Kraus and Union Station's "Baby, Now That I've Found You" (this especially opens up with a Carver 'Sonic Holigraphy' unit on this album), Trapt's 'Headstrong', Don Williams' DDD version of 'Country Boy', Calvin Hampton's, "The Wedding March" from "Digital Pipes, The Splendor of the Organ" (was BIG as expected it should be) a digital recording of a cathedral pipe organ, Sheffield Labs' "Escape Clause" was 'crisp, solid and punchy', Most of the cuts from Michael Jacksons' 'Number Ones' such as "Bad" "Beat It", and "Smooth Criminal", were 'KILLER', Van Halens' '1984' cuts 'ROCKED', but especially "Hot for Teacher", a recording of 'Saint Patricks Cathedral Choir' (was very 'realistic' to listen to), and a few others, all digitally recorded and some 'DDD'.
